Beltran just pulled up lame. In theory this is bad news for the Cardinals.

In theory.

Replaced by Carpenter. Carpenter promptly hits a 2 run homer. :?

Matt Carpenter, Pete Kozma, Daniel Descalso, Allen Craig. These are the guys leading the charge for the Cardinals in the 2012 playoffs. UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE

I mean, it's not like the SF lineup is much better.

Giants had seven hits and five walks through six innings but only one run. They've gotten two more hits in the seventh. Hopefully they can finally break through here.

I'm confused by this ARod stuff. Girardi is seeming extremely reactionary by benching him early in the playoffs after he was their #3 hitter going into the postseason. And now he's continuing to do it. I'll be surprised if he's a Yankee next season.

He's got an onerous contract, declining performance, a full NTC and a strong stated preference to stay in NY. I think he's immovable, or close to it.

But Girardi's usage of him has been curious. He plugged him onto the 3 spot even though he'd been their fifth or sixth best hitter, and then promptly yanked him altogether. It's almost like he wanted to expose him, or thought he'd be motivated by being placed in the third spot, but pulled him out of disgust or something when he struggled. You can't DH him over Ibanez at this point. Chavez was better in the regular season, but he has been just as bad as ARod this postseason.

Maybe there's more going on than we know.

My question is after the Cardinals win the WS, who are they going to get off the scrap heap to play out his ass next year? Mark Prior? Jeff Bagwell? Does it matter? They could grab the best HS player in the St. Louis area and he'd probably work out.

Why hasn't Mark Prior signed there yet? He'd be healed instantly.

I thought the same, don that Cardinal uniform and feel the magic.

They tried to resurrect both Rich Hill and Matt Clement and failed, I'd say they aren't able to work their magic on former Cubs but there was that year or so of Todd Wellemeyer.

At least Carpenter wasn't awful in the minors and had a pretty decent season in limited duty this year. It's still horseshit, but not nearly as ridiculous as Kozma and Descalso.

Craig is legitimately good. Carpenter much less so, but still not egregious.

Kozma is [expletive] ridiculous. He had a .647 OPS at Memphis and most of his milb career was as bad or worse. He's organizational filler. Descalso isn't quite as bad, but he's also decidedly not good.

Ryan Theriot, he of the lofty .692 OPS in the minors, put up a .934 OPS for the Cubs in 159 PA in 2006. Kozma has put up a .952 OPS in 82 PA. These things happen often in baseball; it's not really freakish at all. The difference between the two is that one organization can consistently put out a competitive team, even if it is only one that can take advantage of a weak division (much like the team the Cardinals are playing right now, who ended up with 6 more wins above their pythag despite losing their closer and Melky...man, they must be inhumanly lucky!).

But yeah, whatever, sorcery, pixie dust, just dumb luck, blah-blah-blah. Put yourself in a position to compete and you put yourself in a position to be able to actually take advantge of having the Ryan Theriots and the Kozmas of the world.

To be fair, Ryan Theriot got progressively better leading up to his promotion. He was never .900 OPS good (and his outburst at the end of an awful season amounted to nothing, and he never repeated it), but his last couple seasons in the minors were decent-good by middle infielder standards. Pete Kozma has been consistently awful, with his last two years being among his worst. It's a wonder he even got a call-up.

But your point about putting yourself in position to take advantage is one I've been making myself. But that doesn't mean we can't vent a little in a game thread. I don't think too many people are being entirely serious here.
