As much as I hate the Cardinals, its hard to look past their 7-1 record in their last 8 postseason series and call them 'sub-championship'. They put up rather mediocre regular season records, but obviously there is something they are doing right to build a team that can win best of 5 or 7 series. We're talking about 44 game sample size since 2006 (27-17 overall record including the 0-3 record in 2009). Maybe they are just the luckiest team in all of professional sports, and I realize they've gotten some pretty fortunate breaks, but the more they win the harder it is to say that.

Uh no.

Why are you so upset about this?

Are you saying he's a Bears fan because of their great history of winning championships?

I just have this crazy notion that it's odd for people to have favorite teams they connect to located all over the united states. And compared to the rams, yeah I'd say the bears have a pretty amazing history. Probably had the best NFL team ever in our lifetimes.

The Cardinals did have the third best run differential in the majors this year (behind Washington and NY). If anything, they under-performed quite a bit during the regular season for one reason (injuries) or another (luck).

I grew up in Southern Illinois in the 1980s. Cardinals and Bears country.

Have I passed the residency test or do I need to produce a birth certificate Mr Trump?

Yeah, the sad (or not sad depending on your perspective) reality is that with the exception of the NBA, all pro-sports playoffs now are more or less a coin flip.

Not to say that the winner is just blindly lucky, just that there is really no way to predict the results of them anymore with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

If you want predictability, love soccer.

The Cardinals are a testament to the value of bullet proof bullpens (especially high strike out relievers), good defense and avoiding outs in the playoffs. That's pretty much the magic postseason formula. Get in, and have those three things happen.

You can throw 2006 out. That was an absolute crazy fluke. That team was hot garbage.

Not even close.

"This is how it's done in Southern Illinois" is never, ever a valid defense.

If we're talking about the eras of these teams that most people on this board would have actually experienced, I'm not sure I'd take that of the Bears over the Rams.

And, uh, yea, Cubs fan from KC.

Located all over the US. Like Chicago and that city on the other side of the world...St Louis.

You aren't coming off very good in this one .

I mean it's ok, I just don't get it. If the Bears and Bulls are good enough for you to cheer for, why not the White Sox or Cubs? Is it because they don't win enough?

Maybe when he was born, the St Louis Rams didn't exist? There are a number of reasons someone might grow up a fan of teams from different cities. Your view on the matter is the curious one.

Cardinals were 20th in defensive efficiency and 19th in bullpen K% this year.

Yep. They also brought up Trevor Rosenthal, Shelby Miller, Traded for Mujica and moved Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn to the bullpen. They've committed 2 errors in these playoffs. They have the best obp in the playoffs.

1 of those things (the most important) is reflective of the season, 1 of them is a not unexpected outcome due to roster moves and one you can call a fluke but it's not exactly breaking new baseball ground to have a team have lucky timing with their defensive competency.

Never mind, Kyle. You're right. It keeps happening because it's all luck. 9 playoff berths in 13 seasons is just sheer luck. That's sound.

1) Errors for measuring defense.

2) Citing postseason results to prove that postseason results are not a SSS fluke

3) Moving the goalposts between regular-season performance and playoff performance.

Nope. You maybe wanted to read somewhere in my post that I claimed all of the Cardinals regular season performances were definitely predictive of their postseason success. But I didn't. In fact I qualified it pretty clearly with the sentence, "Get in, and have those three things happen."

I understand though, you want to find an argument where there is none, or as you put it, "move the goal posts." Maybe you're bored, maybe you think your favorite team's lack of success compared to another person's favorite team's success somehow reflects on you so you have to devalue it somehow? Most likely you are that particularly common brand of internet personality that reads an angle into every interaction you have that can allow you to intellectually jerk yourself off to prove your own intelligence to yourself.

My point is that every successful MLB team has things go right for them in the postseason and the fallacy that it ONLY happens to the Cardinals is annoying, pathetic and pointless. You shouldn't get so worked up about it. They aren't doing this to piss you off, you know and when you scream "PIXIE DUST" at the top of your lungs to anyone who listen, you only empower the dumb on my side of the fence to laugh and say, "NUH-UH DUMMY, IT'S OUR SUPERIOR CULTURE, NOT LUCK! WE DO IT RIGHT SO GOOD THINGS HAPPEN." which is, of course, equally stupid.

I just feel like many people in Illinois cherry picked the Cardinals because they are nearby and win a lot. I find it rather annoying. It's ok if you don't.

A lot of people in Southern Illinois probably picked the Cardinals because of proximity. I think that is much more of a factor than where the state lines are, or some notion that because you live in a state it means you have to be a fan of teams within it.

If some yokel from Belleville or Centralia or something is a Cards fan, I don't the controversy.

Me either, but why the hell did they do that only in baseball? Why not football also?

Maybe I went overboard. I was a little shocked at how controversial Kyle thought me basically posting what amounts to, "y'all, its good to hit good, pitch good & field good if your team wants to be good in the playoffs."

I understand where you're coming from, Illini, because I know plenty of Chiefs/Cardinals fans and Bears/Cardinals fans and a fair amount of Packers/Cardinals fans Cowboys/Cardinals fans and 49ers/Cardinals fans. What you have to understand is that many people my age (24) and older had favorite football teams before the Rams came into town. Now, if you jumped on the "bob-and-weave" bandwagon and then jumped back to your team when the wheels came off, I think that's weak. And many have done that. But I do think there is something to what Illini is saying. For instance, Mizzou has zero national championships in anything. The fan support is just not there. There are way too many fans of Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, Duke and all the SEC schools (because everybody thinks they're "southern"). In general, Cardinals fans are front runners outside of their support for the Cardinals. But to say that MET is one because he likes the Bears and Cardinals is hard to support.

Yeah I shouldn't just assume MET is that way. But good lord am I around a lot of that here. KU basketball, STL cardinal, KState football, and Chicago bulls fans here are common. So frustrating.
