To be fair, Ryan Theriot got progressively better leading up to his promotion. He was never .900 OPS good (and his outburst at the end of an awful season amounted to nothing, and he never repeated it), but his last couple seasons in the minors were decent-good by middle infielder standards. Pete Kozma has been consistently awful, with his last two years being among his worst. It's a wonder he even got a call-up.

Theriot was trending in the right direction, but there's not much there to expect anything but a middling placeholder at best? Better than Kozma? Sure, but that's hardly an accomplishment. The point is that teams stumbling on paltry minor leaguers having relatively small sample sizes of amazing play is hardly unique to the Cardinals. I sincerely doubt Kozma will pull it off for a sustained season, and will likely trend into irrelevancy as Theriot did.

But your point about putting yourself in position to take advantage is one I've been making myself. But that doesn't mean we can't vent a little in a game thread. I don't think too many people are being entirely serious here.

I honestly think some people do. Or at the very least can't resist tediously trotting out an exceedingly tedious meme at every possible opportunity.

But yes, I couldn't agree more with the former part. The Cardinals put themselves in a position to win consistently, even if it is just winning a crappy division. When you do that you get to capitalize on these none-flukey "flukes".

Ryan Theriot, he of the lofty .692 OPS in the minors, put up a .934 OPS for the Cubs in 159 PA in 2006. Kozma has put up a .952 OPS in 82 PA. These things happen often in baseball; it's not really freakish at all. The difference between the two is that one organization can consistently put out a competitive team, even if it is only one that can take advantage of a weak division (much like the team the Cardinals are playing right now, who ended up with 6 more wins above their pythag despite losing their closer and Melky...man, they must be inhumanly lucky!).

But yeah, whatever, sorcery, pixie dust, just dumb luck, blah-blah-blah. Put yourself in a position to compete and you put yourself in a position to be able to actually take advantge of having the Ryan Theriots and the Kozmas of the world.

And this is why every season is "sacred" Just because your mean projection is 77 wins with certain additions doesn't mean TANK TANK TANK

God I love Yankee elimination day. We should get off work tomorrow.

Save it for Cardinals elimination day, if we ever have one of those again

The Yankees are about to be a hot mess. And Girardi made it all worse by benching ARod.

And Granderson.

Yeah I don't get it, isn't Joe a Northwestern graduate? How hasn't he thought this all out better?

Worse, he has a BS in Industrial Engineering-- you know, the study of optimizing processes.

Fair or not, industrial engineers are the jokes of any engineering department.

Need to find the video of Delmon Young throwing a bat at an ump in celebration of his ALCS MVP and getting called a class act.

Someone called him a class act? Hell, just this year didn't he have some drunken rant against jews?

My first thought when the Tigers were up 2-0 on the Yankees with Verlander going in Game 3 was "oh crap, this is going to be like 2006 again where the Tigers sweep to get to the series, but get rusty having to wait around for the cardinals to win in 7 games. " Hopefully the long layoff doesn't affect them too much.
