I wouldn't mind if the Cubs replaced Len with Sutton. I don't mind Len, but as someone stated early the Len and Bob combo was better than the sum of its parts.

 

So much that I disagree with here. Replacing Len with Sutton would be awful. Len was the reason the pairing was good, he wasn't elevated by Brenly in any way.

 

I guess I see it different. I think Len is a decent enough announcer but I would much prefer Sutton. IMO Bob was the more entertaining of the two the more valuable one to the broadcast team.

I see that I am in the minority with my opinion. Len is pretty average and boring. Could you imagine a broadcast team of Len and Moreland? Whoever the Cubs pick, I hope they have a little bit of personality.

No, I know he uses a crazy amount of cliches and can get annoying at times, but I love his enthusiasm for the game and for his team. He is also informative and entertaining to listen to. Len is from the cookie cutter school of broadcasting, which is fine as long as they get someone with a personality to team him up with.

Hawk is so bad that I take my cochlear implants out and hit the mute button when the Sox are playing an AL team I like. AND I still can hear him. Even quite a few White Sox fans don't like him. At least my White Sox friends don't.

 

I know you said Len is boring and whatnot, but isn't most pbp guys, in general, "boring" for the most part? I want a pbp guy who can call a game well, give some cool stats/tidbits, and not try to distract you from the game itself. Len is one of best when it comes to that. The color guy is where I wanna hear some cool stories, stats, and personality, but not being too over the top either.

Big "personality" and blatant homerism don't belong in the TV booth, particularly when the team has a large national viewership. That stuff is great for a lot of the hometown fans, but it should be confined to the local radio broadcasts, imo. Santo was a great example of this. And really, animated, colorful play-by-play isn't necessary on TV at all. The TV team should be professional and unobtrusive, maintaining a subtle lean toward their team without crossing the line into homerism and cheerleading.

 

Len is great at this, imo. And there are few play-by-play guys who are as informative and articulate as Len is, either. Certainly not Hawk [expletive] Harrelson.

Kasper isn't neutral in the broadcasts. He clearly calls the game from the perspective of what the Cubs need to do to win and the changes in his tone definitely reflect a rooting interest in the team. What he does do objectively is analyze and inform the fans, which is more than a lot of broadcast teams do. It does no one good to spew off the type of homer analysis that Harrellson does because it does not accurately portray the game or the team to the fan.
