So as we wait for conjecture to turn into actual news, I thought it might be fun to make a team of former Cubs that you're surprised are still hanging around MLB. The inspiration for this was Jason Marquis. Cesar Izturis also somehow still has a job.

What other former Cubs are still defying all odds and hanging around?

Izturis is the 2nd most surprising one - I never would have guessed that 6 years after we traded for him he'd still be getting quality playing time in the bigs.

The most surprising one is 38-year-old Miguel Cairo. According to Baseball-Reference, he's been 114 runs worse with the bat than an average player would have been over his career and yet there he is, still kicking.

Ronnie Cedeno-Pirates

Angel Pagan-Giants

Henry Blanco-D'Backs

And recently retired but amazingly closer to making this list than I'd of thought:

Augie Ojeda

Will Ohman & Miguel Batista, although I think both had to accept minor league assignments with the Reds & Braves recently. But they've been in the league forever.

Also Chad Gaudin.

Others who come to mind:

Farnsworth

LaTroy Hawkins

Jerome Williams

Eric Hinske

Kevin Gregg

Juan Cruz

Jerry Hairston

Casey McGahee

Scott Downs

Jason Kendall (just "officially" retired)

Not that I'm surprised those guys have jobs in the league, just naming some former Cubs still out there.

I had to look these up to believe it. Jerome Williams?!?

Did he have to beat out Mike Harkey in spring training?

I'm surprised someone didn't know he was still around. He's been a decent player for a few years.

Yeah, the only one of that list that was really surprising was Blanco.

I liked him back then and didn't like that the Cubs let him go (though I had no idea he'd become the player he did).

Cedeno's with the Mets, not the Pirates.

I had Williams on my fantasy team for a while. He was actually having a nice year before getting DL'ed.

Jerome Williams and Henry Blanco are the two most surprising names to me in this thread.

I thought for sure Williams had been out of baseball for a few years and I figured Blanco would be a coach by now.

Somehow I have zero memory of Jerome Williams.

Well if you blinked you would have missed it.

I had managed to block out the entire existence of Gregg until this thread. Damn you all.

Rich Hill pitched for the Red Sox this year.

Sam Fuld hasn't been mentioned

Fuld does have a very impressive Wikipedia entry:

I had no idea that the mothers of grown men were writing wikipedia entries for their sons now.

Holy hell, that Fuld entry is insane. I think it's a safe bet we now know how he's been spending his time off post-surgery.
