What the hell is Machado's problem this weekend? He drastically overreacts to being tagged by Josh Donaldson and causes benches to clear Saturday, and Josh Donaldson to get beaned in the same game, and now on Sunday he hits A's catcher Norris in the back of the head twice on follow through, the second time knocking him out of the game. He then proceeds to strike out and fake swing/throw the bat towards 3B. He's got to be facing a decent length suspension.

5 games. Not sure that's enough, really.

The easy solution is that baseball should just eliminate AB's as a stat.

Yes, this also means that BA should be forgotten and SLG should be adjusted to include the bases for walks + HBP and divided by PA.

It still amazes me how many people that work in baseball (in organizations, announcers and commentators) have so little understanding of how the game they have been involved in for most of their life actually works.

It's like when Dayton Moore explained his rosters inability to take a walk. He claimed the Royals are always at the bottom of the league in walks because they play in such a large park so pitchers are more likely to challenge hitters. Kind of sounds plausible I guess, but the stats show that in the time span he was talking about (a few years) the Royals actually walked more often at home than on the road. You would think these guys would know these things.

That does not sound at all easy.

Just use wOBA. It works because of scale. People can understand it and it has an objective anchor.

Okay, someone explain to me why the call on the field is so important when a play is challenged. You have a human being watching something in full speed, possibly with a bad angle vs SLOW MOTION VIDEO REPLAY. Today for instance, Nate Schierholtz hit a ball to the shortstop for what should have just been a FC but was called out at first base for a double play. A few weeks ago there was a play at third base in San Fran where Olt pretty clearly tagged the runner who was called safe. Neither time the was the call changed after it was reviewed. If people had seen the replay before the umpire made his call, no one would have thought Schierholtz was out or Olt didn't tag that Giants baserunner. There shouldn't need to be 100% certainty to overturn a call on the field when the umpire was probably 50% sure his call was correct.

Also, just to be clear, this isn't just a bitter Cubs fan rant, as I don't give a [expletive] about losses at this point in the season, and that was the case for me fairly early into 2014. I wasn't really upset by these calls, but more confused.

To create a baseline of judgement and maintain some dignity for the umps as they get outsourced.
