Few things...

1) Wladimir Balentien just broke Sadaharu Oh's 49 year old single-season HR record of 56 home runs in Japan with roughly 3 weeks to spare in the season.

2) Vladimir Guerrero has announced he's officially retired form baseball

3) Todd Helton announced he's retiring at the end of the season.

I wonder if Balentien would ever consider coming back to the US if a team offered a multiyear deal.

Mark Kotsay retiring too. They come in threes.

Josh Donaldson has a [expletive] 7 WAR.

There's a former Cub that doesn't get mentioned much. He might end up as the 2nd best position player drafted under Hendry's regime (already goes to Baez).

Astros are really popular in Houston these days:

The game had a 0.04 Nielsen rating, which represents an average audience of about 915 households or about 1,000 viewers on average.

In the FOURTH largest city in the country, mind you. Wow.

People in Florida are the worst

They're all retired northerners. Bunch of Yankee/Red Sox/Phillies fans don't give two craps about the Marlins or Rays

So Vlad is a sure fire HOFer, although he probably won't be a first ballot selection. He doesn't have any of the counting stats (2590, 449) but was a scandal free (IIRC), well liked player with an MVP and 9 All Star selections to his name.

Helton has a decent case and will probably get in eventually through the Vets Committee. Obviously the Coors Factor will be held against him, as it should (home: .350/.447/.613; away: .289/.389/.475), but he was well respected, scandal free, and was the face of his franchise for over a decade. I think he's a great fit for a Vets Committee selection down the road.

Speaking of Helton, I always like the 2000 NL MVP voting: Helton led the league in BA, OBP, SLG, TB, RBI, Hits, and Doubles and was 5th in voting. Not saying he deserved it that year, but that always sticks out as an outlier that someone would lead in all those cats and only get 5th in voting.

There's no such thing as surefire HOFer anymore, thanks to the writers.

Public ballots should be a thing if for no other reason than to allow us to find out whatever schmucks vote against Maddux so that we can publicly execute them.

Yep. Also, I wonder who the dbag writer will be to not vote for Maddux "because no one else has ever gotten 100% of the vote".

Helton should get in IMO on a regular ballot.

Agreed, but if Larry Walker didn't get in on the first ballot idk if Helton does. Walker accumulated more HR in 1,400 less PA's, both had very similar career triple slash lines and Walker accumulated 14 more fWAR over his career. But yeah, Helton has that whole playing his whole career on same team thing which apparently is worth something.

So glad I'm a casual Royals fan. If the Cubs were in the position the Royals are in and they blew a 3-0 lead, and then let the go-ahead run score because 1. the 1B couldn't field what should have been a double play and 2. the LF lazily went back on a fly ball that sailed on him, I would have broken this hotel room TV. Also, later in the inning the 2B inexplicably dropped the ball as he was about to make a routine throw to first.

I know all fan bases complain about the way their managers manage the bullpen (and the Royals have the lowest ERA by a bullpen since 1990), but Ned Yost really does some idiotic stuff. His decision to pitch Guthrie in the 8th on Sunday was just horrific. This is a long read, but it is right on.
