I know he was arrested for it a while ago, but now it's official... Milton Bradley was convicted of abusing his wife and faces a possible 7.5 years in prison

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/9339514/former-los-angeles-dodger-milton-bradley-convicted-abusing-wife

Bradley, 35, was convicted after a four-week trial of nine misdemeanor counts, including four counts of spousal battery, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of making criminal threats, Los Angeles city attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan said. He faces up to 7½ years in jail at his sentencing, which is scheduled for July 2.

A few weeks ago it was a big deal that he threw 130 pitches.

Today, it’s a big deal he threw only 99.

All of this number-watching obviously does work or sports teams would not be spending millions and creating new departments to research tendencies, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

But it is still sport, and nothing will ever be able to trump the inherent unpredictability of baseball. After all, the stats say Nelson Cruz makes that catch in Game 6 in the 2011 World Series. But he didn’t, so where is your math there?

Take that, nerds.

Someone forward that article to Ken Tremendous, stat.

The counting craze that once was cute and chic is now all but ruining America’s second favorite past-time.

Scores of math whizzes, nerds and live-in-their-parent’s-basement geeks are threatening to turn Royals at Rangers into a Bobby Fisher vs. Boris Spassky chess match, minus the intellect.

THAT COIN THAT YOU SAID WOULD LAND HEADS 50% OF THE TIME JUST LANDED TAILS. WHERE IS YOUR MATH NOW?

If it is minus the intellect, they're not really math whizzes, now are they?

some guy from SI and a professor (from the university of his mom's basement) on CNBC talking about the decline of baseball, citing Miami, Philly, Houston and Cubs among others with declining attendance and the exorbitant prices.

its' really mostly about the Marlins and pointless

Yeah I liked the headline about baseball falling by the wayside followed by the graphic immediately showing that the Marlins are responsible for all of it.

This was old five years ago. Do they just recycle material like a bad comedian and assume it still gets laughs?

Really interesting long form story of a kid who wanted to be a baseball prospect, so he just kept faking stories until he got coverage: http://www.sbnation.com/longform/2013/6/6/4392208/montaous-walton-profile-fake-online-prospect

Ty Cobb beat this kid by a century.

he certainly would have beat him a century ago /

Was just about to post that about Cobb. He so thoroughly had all the sportswriters in the country convinced of his talent, sight unseen, that even Grantland Rice wrote a big column about him. When the 18 year old Cobb later confessed that he had written the hundreds of letters, postcards, and telegrams praising himself, he said it was because he "was in a hurry."

That story about Montaous is a great read. It's kind of surprising he didn't improve his grammar along with his ability. "toronto blue jays"...seriously?

What a bizarre article, and I don't just mean the real life situation. Did anyone else feel like the author really went out of his way to avoid criticizing Walton? The guy comes across as pathological, but Brandon seems to want to portray him as some enthusiastic rascal. It blows my mind that he actually spent multiple days letting Montaous spin his [expletive] before calling him on it.

Is it not Clay Buchholz? I checked a few days ago.

EDIT: Well [expletive]. I guess tacking on 8 scoreless 3-hit innings will do that for you.

P.S. James Russel has the 3rd highest bWAR in the NL among relievers (tied with Justin Wilson at 1.2 bWAR), behind only Edward Mujica and Rex Brothers (who has a 2.0 bWAR in 25.2 innings).

He said in his q and a in the comments that he really felt bad for the kid and it was a difficult issue to write about. Fwiw.

Is there a way to quickly/easily look up overall team payroll for the last 20 years for various teams? I'd like to be able to compare some numbers for an argument I'm about to launch myself into on Facebook. I'm kind of bored today.
