the Lilly trade was not very good for us

at the same time, the Pirates were able to pry away James McDonald (27 yo, 3.84 ERA with Pittsburgh) for Dotel; was never really too pleased about it

Which essentially means back to AAA again, I would assume?

The Rays and the Giants could both use short term stop gaps at 3B due to injury so maybe the Cubs can get one of them to pick up Dewitt's salary and send over a low level minor leaguer.

Sure it was. We got a guy who had the potential to be a starting 2nd or 3rd baseman in addition to 2 high ceiling pitching prospects. Granted, none of them turned out they was we would have liked but at the time, I was satisfied with the return for 2 months of Ted Lilly and a guy we didn't want anyway. It was certainly better than trading Greg Maddux for a guy who's ceiling was, well, Cesar Izturis.

if DeWitt does not accept the minor league assignment, I'm guessing somebody will pick him up. He's the type of player that nobody will give up anything of value for, but if he's free, why not.

A lot of teams should have interest in him as a utility guy. The A's are another option, although they just picked up Inge, which I guess makes the Tigers an option. The White Sox could use him. He certainly can't be worse offensively than Brent Morel.

Your definition of high upside must be a lot different than mine is. Because Wallach and Smit were nothing remotely close to having high upside.

Wallach had some upside but obviously never lived up to it.

So you and Jim Hendry thought that apparently. Blake DeWitt is and always has been awful, the #1 guy I've wanted off this team for a while. :good:

Cardenas will supposedly be up to take the vacated infielder spot, per one of the Iowa clubhouse guys on Twitter.

I don't know how reliable this gentleman is - put whatever stock in it you so choose.

This will bring the 25-man back to capacity, but it will leave a 40-man spot open. Preparing for Brett Jackson in a month, perhaps?

I've also read that in Tweets from Bruce Miles and others throughout the day.

I hope they aren't bringing Cardenas up to sit on the bench. I think we all know what Barney is by this point. He's a nice backup 2b/SS who shouldn't be starting for most teams. I'd like to see what Cardenas has to offer.

On July 31, 2010 DeWitt was traded along with minor league pitchers Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit to the Chicago Cubs for Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot.

Yikes. I mean Ted Lilly isn't a hall of famer but he's a pretty good pitcher.

Eh, he wasn't coming back, so it was a decent trade at the time. DeWitt was flawed, but he was still young and was a decently rated prospect. Just one of those deals where you're gambling on prospects.

They were crappy prospects, and we could've got compensation for him in the offseason.

Take a look at Lilly's numbers at the time...The ERA was nice but everything else said decline.

Wallach bombed but at the time he was interesting with tools. Dewitt was a young former touted prospect/first round pick who put up a couple WAR at 22 or so. The other guy was there. Sometimes stuff just doesn't work out.

Looks like that guy was right.

Carrie Muskat ‏ @CarrieMuskat

Reports out of @IowaCubs that Adrian Cardenas headed to Chicago to join #Cubs. Would replace DeWitt as backup infielder

It makes it so much easier to follow the team when the powers that be take my least favorite players off the roster with regularity.

They also keep adding them back on.

But yeah, the roster churn has been entertaining and done in a more than competent way.

I don't think they're going to DFA LaHair
