Crosby would be fine as a 1st piece. He'd take over as our reigning top pitching prospect, if just for a bit. He's probably top 150ish or so overall. Bigtime stuff too.

What if Demp and Barney were packaged to Detroit? Do you think there would be any chance (perhaps with the addition of a third piece) we could get Crosby and Castellanos? I'm just not seeing much outside of Turner/Smyly/Crosby/Castellanos that are all that appealing.

no, not even close. Garza may be able to get us Castellanos, but I have my doubts we'd get much else. Maybe Crosby, if we're lucky. Detroit has 2 other guys that are worth mentioning though. Avi Garcia is a very toolsy OFer that's kind of put it together this year. At least moreso than previously. I think he's 20 and just got moved up to AA. Bruce Rondon is a closer prospect that hits triple digits and has been dominant. I think he's in AA as well.

Olt's K-Rate is 24%, and has remained consistent through his minor league career.

I've been wondering about the possibility of re-signing Dempster myself.

And I agree with the notion of taking the best return regardless of position. If (and it's not likely) Theo/Jed turned Dempster/Garza into Olt/Castellanos + others, I feel confident they could then turn our sudden surplus at 3b into pitching through other avenues.

That said, I'd rather deal with the Dodgers and their pitching top-heavy system.

Olt over Castellanos every time for me. Even if they both might be pipe dreams.

Olt has a K-rate of over 29%, and is only in AA. So he's worse than what Brett Jackson was prior to the more challenging breaking stuff of AAA. So he's basically a good-fielding 3B version of Jackson?

Are you intentionally leaving out the part where Mike Olt has a slash line of .292/.403/.574/.977 with 22 homers, 63RBI, and 51BB in 76 games? And a 14.7% walk rate vs. Jackson's 10.1%? Or an ISO of .282 vs. Jackson .226? Or a wOBA of .428 vs. Jackson's .366?

Doesn't Rondon have control/weight issues?

the sunday night baseball guys basically just gave the cubs a free 5 minute sales pitch for ryan dempster. thanks dudes.

I switched over to the Blue Jays game yesterday after the Cubs game ended and the broadcasters were talking about how good Ryan Dempster has been and how valuable he can be to a team down the stretch. He's so hot right now.

Yeah, Rondon walks more than a few guys. I've never seen him pitch, but I've heard conditioning could be an issue. His profile on milb says he's 190, so I have no idea as to whether that was his weight 5 years ago or not. Either way, he's probably considered a top 200ish prospect. Garcia may be in that range too. By the way, just because I'm bringing them up, does NOT mean I want either of them as a 1st piece for Dempster or a 2nd piece for Garza. Another borderline interesting guy they've got is Adam Wilk. Lefty, excellent control, but not sure whether his stuff translates in the majors. But he's been solid in AAA for basically 2 years now. His major league numbers have been swful, albeit very small sample size.

At this moment, I think that possibility is small. But, let's see what next week brings.

Not sure if that's what you're also implying, but I think we were both talking about the possibility of re-signing him in the offseason after he's traded, not extending him.

Billingsley has inflammation of the elbow flexor tendon. More tests to come tomorrow. Needless to say, that doesn't sound like good news for him.

i'd really like to move him before his next start. he's gotten the 2 starts to prove he's healthy and still good. an injury now would be crushing.

not to mention, that right now anyway, he's the best guy on the market. In a few days, either of Greinke, Hamels, or surprise guys like Annibal Sanchez or Scott Shields could clutter the market.

I am intrigued by the possility of getting Olt and 2 mid-level arms for Garza and 2 arms for Dempster. A big time bat and 4 capable arms would be a nice haul. It would be a lot easier to sign a couple SP 2han get a 3B this offseason. Elite arms are nice to have but are a lot more volatile than elite bats

FWIW

David Kaplan ‏@thekapman

Baseball sources tell me they expect Ryan Dempster to definitely be moved before his next start + White Sox are not at all in play for him.

dempster has a .242 babip against this year and an lob% of 85... wow

shhhhhhhh let's talk about those things AFTER he's traded.

It's a good thing the Dodgers are a likely taker for him then as I doubt Colleti even looks at those stats when he considers trading for a player, if he even knows what they mean or how to interpret them

Bit of an update from Rosenthal, not much that hasn't really been talked about already...

THE DECISION BELONGS TO DEMPSTER

Remember this as the Ryan Dempster trade talks intensify: The Cubs’ right-hander, as a player with 10 years of service, five with the same club, has full veto power over any deal, and can effectively choose his next team.

Dempster, 35, told me several weeks back that he is open-minded to any contender, but surely he would prefer some clubs to others. For one thing, he has spent his entire 15-year career in the more pitcher-friendly National League, and might not want to pitch in the AL in his final two months before becoming a free agent.

Maybe Dempster would approve a major AL power such as the Yankees (who do not appear to be terribly interested in meeting the Cubs’ price).

Maybe he would agree to reunite with the old Marlins’ gang in Detroit — Tigers GM David Dombrowski acquired him for the Marlins in 1996, and Dempster played for manager Jim Leyland in ’98.

Dempster is good friends with Dodgers left-hander Ted Lilly; perhaps that will sway him. Or, perhaps he will just work closely with the Cubs to arrange a deal that is satisfactory for both sides.

The possibility of a contract extension is one other factor to consider.

While Dempster hardly seems the type to demand an extension in exchange for waiving his no-trade rights, the team that acquires him might be interested in such a condition as part of the deal.

The Cubs want to assume the majority of the nearly $7 million remaining on Dempster’s contract to secure better prospects. So, given the high acquisition cost, it makes sense that the acquiring team might want to enhance its own return by getting an extra year or two out of Dempster.

Such a deal would not necessarily happen right away; Dempster might want to familiarize himself with his new environment first. But if a team cannot get draft-pick compensation for Dempster, it might opt for something even better: Dempster himself.
