Finally sitting down to watch a Cubs game this year....Ian Stewart does not look like a number 2 to me. He seems like an 8 or maybe 12 to me. Too much Theriot left in that number.

this team could be full of all-stars and nothing would ever change

:-k

You can't convince me Pujols wouldn't have struck out in Soriano's spot.

You mean if he played for the Cubs? These are the things that are best kept to yourself.

I remember one year in the 1990s that I was very excited because every player or 7/8 in the Cubs' regular lineup had been an all-star at some point in their careers.

I believe last year's lineup about fit the bill: Pena, Castro, Ramirez, Soto, Soriano, Byrd and Fukudome had all been All-Stars at some point, only Barney had not.

And that sure didn't work out...

The positive I'll take from this, is other than one inning, Volstad looked really solid. I'm starting to think it's very plausible for him and Shark to be longterm answers for us.

I will say I'm pretty happy with Volstad's performance today. Put up a quality start against the Cards and who knows how much better that line is if Castro doesn't make that error.

So, that Jackie Robinson commercial listed off the lineage of African American stars and.....Jacoby Ellsbury.

He's part Native American.

There were quite a number of Indian and Hispanic players in the league before Robinson.

Oh, you are one of those people that wallows in the misery of being a Cubs fan. Duly noted.

1998?

Mark Grace - 1B (2 time All star at that point)

Micky Morandini - 2B (1 time All star)

Jeff Blauser - SS (2 time All star)

Jose Hernandez - 3B (0 All star to that point but did make it in 2002) or in August we acquired Gary Gaetti who was a 2 time All star

Henry Rodriguez - LF (1 time All star)

Lance Johnson - CF (1 time All star)

Sammy Sosa - RF (2 time All star)

Scott Servais C (never came close to making the All Star team)

For pitchers, Steve Trachsel made an All Star team in 1996, Kerry Wood didn't make the ASG in 98 but made ASG's afterwards, Terry Mullholland made it once in 1993, Mike Morgan made it in 1991, and of course Rod Beck made it 3 times with the Giants. Somewhat strange but Kevin Tapani never made it. Not that he was awesome but I figured he would have had one year worthy of it.

That's 14/25 players who were either former or future all stars.

The 4th inning happened. I'm not going to pretend it didn't and declare Volstad's outing to be good. It wasn't all Castro's error, balls were being hit all over the place. It was a nightmare, and can't happen if he's going to be a good starter.

Reds and Cards the most bitter rivalry in the central....how the hell does he get paid to announce?

His dad is their announcer, his opinion is not objective.

Thom is their TV announcer as well. What a worthless sack of crap. Glad I missed today's game

Soto, Byrd, Pitcher. An absolute black hole of offense at the bottom of the order.

I'm not even sure they should be sent up in that order at this point.

The thing is, DeJesus has played center so I'm at the point where I want to say [expletive] it, bring on Joe Mather.

As for Soto, while you don't want to go crazy over 9 games, Clevenger has hit well so it's really not unreasonable to give him a few starts, and if he keeps hitting, give him a few more.

This early in the season while calling The Cubs a long shot would be generous, but the objective should still be to give yourself the best chance to win as many games as possible and not play the vets and try and build trade value.

This is another joke, right? 3 earned runs is a "nightmare?"

Growing pains? Sure. But I'm very encouraged by what I've seen out of Shark and Volstad. I think we've found two longterm answers for our rotation. Probably a 3 and a 4. Maybe a 2 and a 3 even.
