We only sign aces and 5+ WAR hitters. And none of this "defense" crap counts.

Moves that make small, incremental improvements to the team are a good thing. Not every move can or should be a blockbuster.

How about one?

Buy Low. Rangers obviously wanted him back. He comes back with a good start. He leaves at deadline returning a prospect. Gonna be alot of these kinda moves next 2 years. Gotta build farm system anyway you can. Ian Stewart same thing. Costed very little and if he has a good season, he will bring a prospect back. hopefully everyone with a no trade on the team is willing to leave. Build farm system for 2 years and spend on year 3 with what you have built . In 3 years, Junior Lake.. Gioskar Amaya.. Brett Jackson.. could be mainstays with Castro. We will be good. Gonna take time. Mark Prior and Zambrano showing up probably were worst thing for this organization. Gave us "hope" for 5 years when we shoulda been selling and not buying.

I'd love that. I was all about overpaying for Pujols or Darvish. Wouldn't mind overpaying Fielder, either... just not by 40 mil.

I tend to think if Stewart is good, they will offer him a multiple year deal through his prime years.

Also, not sure I buy Amaya as a mainstay in 3 years. If he's in AA in 3 years (2014 season), that'll be fine. You hope for better, but that'd be fine.

"Selling" doesn't help much when (1) the parts you're selling are rusted and defective and (2) your own amateur player procurement and development organizations suck.

Let's hope (2) changes so that we'll occasionally have a worthwhile piece to sell.

and Junior Lake is all tools, no skill

Byrd, Garza, Soto, Marmol, Marshall will make our system look alot better after moving them. if zambrano starts hot. he could net us a nice piece at the deadline. Same with Dempster if he agrees to leave when all his buddies are traded off.

And is this one even an improvement? Assuming we dont trade Marmol, even with Marshall gone we have Shark, Cashner, Dolis, Carpenter, Mateo, Russell, Beliveau, Gaub, Maine and Jackson so we have more than enough to put together a more than solid bullpen without dumpster diving.

The only way that Corpas and Johnson make any sense whatsoever is if there are trades brewing that we don't know about.

ESPN article speculates that somehow the Marshall trade and this signing means Shark will get a shot at making the rotation...

????

Dempster/Zambrano/Wood/Wells/Samardzija

It's funny seeing Wood in there and not have it mean Kerry.

yeah that's probably it, the cubs signed reed johnson and manny corpas in order to make a blockbuster deal.

Because that's clearly what I implied and not that if Byrd or Soriano are traded and Jackson starts then it makes sense to add an extra righty for the outfield and if some of our right handed relievers are traded or even put in the rotation then Corpas makes sense.

No problem with Shark getting another shot at the rotation. I also still hope there's a chance of Cashner getting the chance as well. If Garza is traded, Z, Dempster, Cashner, Wood, and Shark could make an interesting rotation. Now if oth of them were in the plans to start than adding the cheap righty makes some sense. Maybe we could see is we can get anything for Wells but then again we might want him as an option for upcoming post Dempster/Zambrano era.

i tried reading that sentence twice and my headache just got worse and worse. comma, semicolon, just any kind of punctuation... we're begging you.

At least the grammar and punctuation comments more match your MO than intentionally trying to twist my words into something you know they weren't meant to say.

so you think it is likely that the cubs signed a couple of dime-a-dozen players who were not in high demand because they have a trade in the works? why not make sure the trade gets done and then sign the generic extra outfielder and middle reliever?
Posted
Otherwise why sign the dime a dozen unwanted players now and not during or after spring training? Even if both guys cost a combined 2-3 mil, there are far better ways to spend that money especially if the plan really is a complete rebuild. However, if these guys are being signed for that price because they are band aids to fill soon to be needed roles, all of the sudden it makes some degree of sense and not just last minute necessities or spare parts.

Have the Cubs made one improvement this off season? I suppose you could argue that Wood is an improvement at SP, but this is pretty depressing.

dejesus will outproduce the .262 /.332/.397 line cubs right fielders put up last season

Depressing? This is very far from depressing. This is a big bowl of hope juice. You want to know what depressing is? 2009-2011. That is depressing.

It is time to move on, and it is happening. Enjoy the ride people.

I guess DeJesus is an upgrade over the horrid carousel that cycled through right field after Fukudome left. And Steve Clevenger certainly can't be any worse than Koyie Hill. Ian Stewart may not be an upgrade over Ramirez but he's whiter and less lazy so that will make everyone happy. Don't forget that we have 5 starting pitchers not named Casey Coleman.

The hope juice will be a lot sweeter and more refreshing if they import the fruit from Cuba.

IF this is the case, then enjoy the tv being off, the stands being half empty, the merchandise sales being way down. Essentially this amounts to alienating the majority of your fan base and cutting a substantial portion of your revenue while only marginally reducing your payroll. While officially putting your chances of being a playoff contender many years out. So, why on earth would you do this, when you have to completely overhaul the stadium in the next couple years and the city or state making any financial concessions is at best questionable given the current economic climate. Outside of the 03/04 draft epstein and hoyer looked remarkably average with their ability to pick and develop prospects into above average major leaguers. So there is no guarantee that in 4 or 5 years we are going to look more like the 03 marlins than the 'pick a year' royals. This is a recipe for how not to succeed as an owner. I remain skeptical, however, mainly because there is far too much revenue at stake.

Almost every move they have made so far, has been a buy low, or sell high. Or just tiny $1 mil stopgap contracts. If that is not how to build a good foundation, I don't know what is. Signing Prince to 8/200? What would you do? Keep in mind, they still could be all in for guys like Cespedes and Soler. Doing that, and selling high / buying low is exactly how you build a foundation.

This is a very Koyie Hill like pickup. Just pointless. There are 10 guys in our system who could contribute to the bullpen as much as this guy next year.

The fact that his name sounds like "corpse" is appropriate for next season because Wrigley is going to be a tomb the last few months.
