The Chicago Cubs have come to terms on a one-year contract with relief pitcher Manny Corpas, according to a major league source.

The source said the deal will officially be announced Friday. Corpas took a physical in Chicago on Thursday. The finances of the deal are not yet known.

He's signed, 1yr deal.

Thoughts?

Meh?

He's a decent enough pitcher when healthy. If the medicals came back alright and the money isn't excessive it should be a pretty nice move. But we can't really judge it til we see what we're paying.

So I'm willing to accept a rebuild, but the fact that we're just piling junk on top of more junk rather than going after young players or at least former top prospects is just a plain waste. I dont care how cheap the guy is, there no reason for him to get a spot over Carpenter, Dolis, or Beliveau. If spring training draws to a close and we're in need of an extra arm for the pen, I'm sure there will be no shortage of available Manny Corpases as free agents or teams trying to trade them for virtually nothing.

That's not how bullpens work. Or available relievers, for that matter.

so i thought about writing this in depth analysis of theo and the direction of the team so here goes:

WTF is going on?

We only sign aces and 5+ WAR hitters. And none of this "defense" crap counts.

Moves that make small, incremental improvements to the team are a good thing. Not every move can or should be a blockbuster.

So, he was on a minor league deal with Texas in 2011? Either they didn't like how he looked at Instructs or he just used them to go somewhere else, I guess. If this helps givd Shark a shot at starting(his last one) I'm for it. On the other hand, part of me is wondering if Kerry Wood has been informed of the rebuild and has decided to go ahead and retire.

What do you mean? By most indications, they are viewing this as a rebuild job, and the moves so far fall in line with that type of plan. Even if the moves bomb, I can't find fault with DeJesus, the trade for Stewart. I don't like Travis Wood that much, but that's a trade that makes sense overall. This, along with Reed Johnson and Jeff Bianchi, is just a small signing that, for the most part, is likely to be inconsequential in the grand picture.

About the only move I didn't like this offseason is leaving Flaherty/Gonzalez available, two upper level guys that could fill stopgap utility roles, and then signing Bianchi for a similar role, but overall, it's not that big a deal.

This was always a possibility entering the offseason, that they would opt to rebuild. Even then, if the years for Fielder come down (I half wonder if a 3 year deal with a huge AAV would get Boras interested, as it could get Fielder out on the market again to get a 5 year deal at age 30 perhaps ... just don't see a team forking over 10 years, and not even sure he gets 8), the Cubs could get involved and get that big bat to build for the 2013/2014 years.

Low risk move and if he can bounce back he could fetch us a nice prospect during the trade deadline.

[/end thread]

although i'm not sure he'd fetch a "nice" prospect
