To go along with that post, I'm not necessarily arguing that there's no way we're feigning interest in those guys. I'm simply arguing that logic isn't on the side of arguing that we are feigning interest in those guys since there's really no tangible benefit to doing it.

There's a tangible benefit. Theo obviously doesn't want the rest of the league (agents and teams) to know what he's going to do. Keep all options open while you negotiate what you want. Keep fans interested in the names they hear. This would hardly be the first time the Cubs showed interest in the top names all winter only to come away with something else. It's practically Cubs Marketing 101 (while acquiring your biggest piece before the convention is Cubs Marketing 201).

Coming in 2nd or 3rd in every major free agent bidding is also known as the MacPhail Doctrine.

I agree with Lefty, but I was duped by the Obama hype.

If they could find a way to unload Soriano and get a team to pay at least half his remaining dollars that would go a long way to helping the organization get healthy. Unfortunately, the new CBA is going to hamper the "build from within model" somewhat. Not to derail this thread I really cannot believe the a majority of owners went along with that deal.

Back on track: I want Fielder bad. Five years 25 mil AAV, mutual option for 6th with a 5 million dollar buy out.

I do think some AL team will be willing to give him an 8 year offer though, we'll see.

There were signs today (I can't say precisely what) to indicate the #Cubs are stepping up their pursuit of Prince Fielder.

Trying to figure out signs that he couldn't say. Caught wind of a meeting between Cubs brass and Boras? And he can't say either because he's not sure it's about Fielder, or because a source asked him not to say any more than that?

Cubs know they lost out on Darvish somehow?

I can't imagine "not being sure if it was about Fielder" would be a reason to be so sneaky.

There was an old conversation here about tomorrow's dollar being worth less than today's dollar, and that fact leading to backloading deals. Has that changed with the economic lull, and will it "unchange" with the recovery?

Does this make a longer deal at less per year more palatable?

I don't think it has anything to do with Darvish except maybe their part is over now and they are waiting to hear who won and who lost.

Apparently he can't say what because he wants people to go through the pay wall for it.

There were indications Thursday that the Cubs are getting more involved in the Prince Fielder sweepstakes and might be ready to step up their pursuit of the free agent first baseman, a league source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick

Although it's uncertain precisely where the Cubs stand in their talks with agent Scott Boras, the source said the Cubs continue to gather information and could be poised to make a serious push for Fielder soon.

The Cubs, Mariners, Rangers, Blue Jays and Dodgers have been mentioned as potential landing sites for Fielder, who hit 38 homers, drove in 120 runs and finished third in the National League MVP race this year behind teammate Ryan Braun and Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.

Length of contract could be an issue for the Cubs and the other teams in the running. Albert Pujols signed a 10-year, $254 million contract with the Angels last week, and Boras is reportedly seeking a 10-year deal for the 27-year-old Fielder.

The Cubs are increasing the intensity of their pursuit of Prince Fielder, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

The Cubs are gathering Fielder-related information and could make a big offer soon. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported that Fielder could be seeking Albert Pujols money; a 10-year contract in the range of $254 million. The Mariners, Rangers, Blue Jays, Nationals and Dodgers, amongst others, are also known to have interest. Fielder owns a stellar .929 career OPS and slugged 38 home runs this past year for Milwaukee.

I think it means we know whether or not we won out on Darvish. If we lose, I think we'd still go after Fielder, perhaps with a little more invested in it. If it we win on Darvish, I think we probably still go after Prince, but maybe try and get him closer to our terms. Shorter term, media marketing dream, blah, blah, blah.

Seems like a Boras-side leak. "The Cubs are gathering Fielder-related information?" Come on. That's about as unspecific as The Mystery Team.

That was my guess. Crasnick found out but can't reveal it until the Ham Fighters accept or deny the bid.

Then again, if any ESPN writer got any sort of info on Darvish it would be a race to see how quickly they can post it on Twitter.

I wasn't even thinking that angle, but I bet you're correct. It smacks of Boars. He's probably trying to light a fire.

I know it's Boras and he always talks up his clients, but I hope he's laughed out of the office of any GM that he asks for "Pujols money."

My guess is that line us pursued for a while, but Prince ends up signing a shorter deal and Boras talks about how it's high AAV deal that gives him flexibility to get another deal down the road.

But no one's giving him 10 years or 250MM.

If you want to be a crazy-eyed optimist, they could be pushing to get Fielder done before the winner of the Darvish bid is revealed. That way the loser(s) on Darvish don't up the ante on Fielder.
