I bet his blog just regurgitates the Heyman stuff.

I mean, I'm glad that he's willing to report what he hears and won't stubbornly stick to his story if he gets newer better information, but it's still crazy that just yesterday or the day before he was reporting we were probably out and had no money.

The Chicago sports media has been bad in recent years, but this offseason they've been embarrassingly bad. They're just slinging [expletive] at the wall.

My thinking is that the Fielder sweepstakes is about to become a 3 horse race between the Cubs, Mariners, an whoever loses out on Darvish between te Rangers and Jays. I think all 3 have an even shot, however with Hamiltons impending free agency and their bigger need for pitching the Rangers may be less of a threat than the Jays. The Mariners, on the other hand strike me as a team that could put in an all in we suck and have nothing to lose monster bid.

Makes sense. Most of these reporters have spent the last 10+ years building up sources in the MacPhail/Hendry regime. Most of those sources are now gone and/or out of the loop. They haven't had much time to establish relationships with sources in the Epstein/Hoyer group, so they're stuck on the outside like the rest of us.

I think the Mariners would really have to blow other offers out of the water, particularly in terms of length, to land him. I say this because they aren't poised to be a winner anytime soon, it's an unfamiliar league and perhaps most importantly, Safeco would likely suppress his numbers. The last part would be of particular importance on a shorter deal because it could negatively impact a following contract. There is the benefit of the DH, but I'm not sure that outweighs the other factors.

And then there's the fact that Seattle isn't a big spender. I think Boras is doing what he can to keep the Seattle angle alive.

The Rangers and Jays are the biggest threats, and will become more so if they lose out on Darvish.

That and the new regime seems to be one that doesn't leak much information at all.

It's still pretty sad watching them grasp at air. And it seems their powers of deduction and critical thinking are really lacking.

Nick Cafardo @nickcafardo

Cubs are not major players for Prince Fielder. Not ready to spend big.

Also for some reason the mental image I had of Nick Cafardo was a young person. Not sure why I was surprised to find out he was a balding fat man.

I do not trust old balding fat men, so I still believe we are in it.

Cafardo would likely have an Epstein connection.

But, like all offseason reports, who knows where he heard it, and even if he did hear it from somewhere inside, then who knows if the source was lying or not.

All the stories I read about the Matsuzaka posting indicated Boston reporters had no idea because Theo never let things slip. If people are saying the Cubs don't have the money though, I'm guessing that is purposefully linked from the inside.

Maybe they were relying on all that sweet Sam Hurd money.

It's pretty coincidental that one report (that seems to come from Boras) about how the Cubs are "getting serious" about Fielder is followed almost immediately by a report that indicates the Cubs don't have the money and aren't serious...from a reporter who would have a connection to the Cubs' front office.

Seems like a simple case of negotiation through the media. Boras wants to drive the price up by leaking stories about big market clubs, and the Cubs want to keep the price down (either for themselves or someone else) by crying poor.

If this happens, then the Cubs need to get really serious about prying Justin Smoak away from Seattle.

there is a sense (from Mariner-fan friends of mine) that Seattle will bid big on Fielder in response to the Angels and also Texas.

i hope not

Ha! As if they have any chance to compete.

I still think he goes to Texas.

Where would they be getting that sense from other than blind optimism and the same Tweets we've been picking apart for weeks now?

I'm asking where would they be getting such a sense that it would somehow matter?

I've got a strong sense that we're going to ball out on our bids on Darvish and Fielder. Tell them about it.
