you've got to be kidding me. 9 years?

He's 27 years old.

Of course it is not the smartest thing, but with the DH he's going to be great for at the very least 6 of those years.

I'll take the under. For $214M.

To be fair, he could do even 7 great-solid years if he followed Mo Vaughn's trajectory. His last worthwhile year was 34. Granted, he does have quite a bit of weight on Vaughn.

Now trade Castellanos & Turner for Garza and try to win a ring.

After the initial shock, this was my first rational thought. The Fielder move is surely a win-now move -- goodness, they must know that the deal is going to be really bad at the end -- so jumping in for Garza seems to make a lot of sense.

Not really. They are already positioned to win now, at the very least their division. If anything this deal is more of a reason to keep their own prospects so in 3-4 years they will have affordable players to fill in for the aging fatties.

So Pujols and Fielder both go NL to AL. Darvish goes to the AL.

The NL got Buehrle and Papelbon.

I maintain my theory that the AL is a significantly better league.

you're a real out of the box thinker.

ETA: Wait, doesn't "out on a ledge" mean the same thing??

Oooh. I vaguely recall Tim arguing with me on that point at sometime in the past. But I may have said something stupider and not be remembering.

I think it's probably supposed to be limb, because you are suggesting the thing holding you up may break. Going out on a ledge suggests suicide.

You forgot that the NL got Theo!

Ledges are where people go to jump, limbs are where people shouldn't go because they are dangerous. if you are going out on the ledge, you are over reacting when you shouldn't. If you are going out on a limb you are making a claim with not a lot of support.

You are all welcome, in advance.

No, the point is limbs and ledges are dangerous things to be out on. The phrase originates because you're making a claim that is shaky. Being on a ledge or a limb is a shaky thing to be on, because either can give way.

I just now remembered that Cecil Fielder played for the Tigers in his career...so that picture is Prince Fielder.

I actually had a post made up about how much that really looked like Prince Fielder...then I remembered the Cecil stuff so I changed it to that.

We're assuming foresight of long-term planning for a team that just myopically gave a 5-ish WAR designated hitter $23.8 million a year (citing bukie, 2:53 p.m., 1-24-12)? I can't help but read this as anything but a Grossman-esque "eff-it, I'm going deep" move.

But the sex cannon decision doesn't make a lot of sense, so that goes against what was said earlier. This acquisition doesn't make it more sensible to go after Garza. It actually allows them to make a similar impact while holding onto their prospects. A team with a lot of money tied up into veterans needs its prospects to start filling holes when those deals become harmful.

I don't know why I convince myself every year that this will be the offseason that Boras doesn't absolutely fleece someone for his star client.

I have a buddy who has been railing for a few weeks now on how Boras has had a horrible offseason.

Not anymore.
