Voting him in the year after he does seems like a cruel joke by the veterans committee

Agree. Santo said he didn't want to be inducted after he died yet that's exactly what they did. Eff those guys.

If it were solely up to Joe Morgan, the Veterans Committee would vote Ron Santo and Maury Wills into the Hall of Fame.

"I can't really give you a 'why' (Santo has not been voted in yet)," Morgan told us before broadcasting Sunday night's Cubs- Phillies game for ESPN. "I can only tell you what I have said before when people ask me: I get a vote in the Veterans Committee. The first name I put down is Maury Wills. I'll just tell you that. Then I put Ron Santo's name down second. I voted for Ron every time; I voted for Maury Wills every time I had a vote."

[expletive] you, voters. All the guy wanted for the past 20+ years was a Cubs championship and to be elected to the HoF. You could have given him one, but predictably waited till he was gone. What a [expletive] joke

He was the Juan Pierre of the 60's, except he played shortstop

It's a shame they had to wait until after he died. If he was still alive, I doubt he would be in today. It was just going to happen this way.

Maybe I'm being extreme here but this doesn't really make me all that happy. This was the one year that I didn't want to see him make it, and of course he does. I wanted so badly for him to make it each time over the last decade and felt sadness everytime he fell short. Everyone knew he wanted this so badly. That's not a reason to vote someone in of course but most of us would agree that his credentials were there.

Voting him in the year after he does seems like a cruel joke by the veterans committee, and while I'm extremely happy for Ron and his family who is around to see it, I wish they would have waited another year to see him get in.

I totally agree. I think I'm more angry that they put him in the HOF now than I would've been if they'd just kept him out. It's like no one felt like he deserved to see it happen.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why it took so long? It may be the whole screwed up process, but it seems odd that he makes it *after* he died. I'm not saying this is accurate, but it almost makes me feel like the people that vote didn't like Ronny "campaigning" or something, but knew he was hall-worthy, so they voted him in after he died. I don't know......I'm happy he's finally in but I do agree with some of the posts in this thread -- that this feels somewhat hollow for me.

Does anyone have any ideas on why he wasn't voted in on past opportunities?

Yeah, and based on how he came off on air....I think he would have been more appreciative than anyone that has ever entered the Hall. Not even exaggerating.

Because he was a very borderline case, he wasn't particularly well-liked by peers and the media of his time, and HOF voters get off on being withholding.

He wasn't near a borderline case, but your other points are valid. I personally think it's a self-defeating idea to have only members of an exclusive club vote to let people into the exclusive club when the only reason those voters are notable is because of the exclusivity.

Also, the pool of voters changed over time. The people who voted him in this time aren't necessarily the same people who voted him out last time, are they?

No, this was a group of MLB 'historians' and one stats guy. Not the Veterans committee.

Members of the "Golden Era Committee" are still members of the hall, right? I know this was recently restructured but honestly don't know the details.

The Golden Era Committee was made up of Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Al Kaline, Ralph Kiner, Tommy Lasorda, Juan Marichal, Brooks Robinson, Don Sutton, and Billy Williams. Major league executives Paul Beeston, Bill DeWitt, Roland Hemond, Gene Michael, and Al Rosen are also on the committee along with three media members Dick Kaegel, Jack O'Connell and Dave Van Dyck.

Williams and Van Dyck? So it was a committee formed with the specific purpose of getting Santo elected?

He held the single-season stolen bases record for about 20 years before Henderson broke it in the early 80's.

He couldn't have held it that long. He retired after 1972 with 586 and Brock ended the 1973 season with 635.

So, I had a facebook status stating that Ron getting elected was bittersweet and that it should have happened years ago. A guy I went to college with left this response:

He got voted in by the veterans committee which is basically a bunch of sentimental old guys whose testosterone levels have fallen and don't the the wherewithal to keep the integrity of HOF where is should be. If they can add subpar players afterward, maybe they should also remove subpar players that already in. There's a reason he didn't get in for 15 straight years by the BWAA.

Aside from removing him from my friends list, I'm not quite sure how to respond without calling him a moran.
