Too bad Hanley is adamant about playing SS.

Not really. Make it work. Move Castro to 2B.

I'm not moving Castro anywhere, especially for a guy who didn't outperform Barney last year. Hanley isn't a fit. He has to play SS, and he's a bad defensive SS who's had some severe consistency problems at the plate. If it works to be a 3rd team in a Hanley deal, then do that. But otherwise it's not going to be worth it.

That was mostly tongue-in-cheek. I would keep Castro where he is, but I would gladly take Hanley if he would play 3B. I think the offense will come back and be enough for the position.

I think it used to be a maximum of 3 Type A's? Not sure though. I wish the Marlins had signed Wilson instead of Buehrle. Now, they can still go get a 1B, if those rules were right. It may have had something to do with how many Type A's you lost as well, to where you could sign more if you lost some as well.

Under the old CBA, the limit this year would be 2 or as many as the team loses. I have no idea if that rule carried over.

Maybe it's still 2. Bell may not count, since he's not costing a team a draft pick to sign. The Pads still get their comp picks, but Bell and all closers other than Papelbon and a few position players like Willingham and Cuddyer fell into this grouping. I'm sure the Marlins must have at least one to use up, or we would have heard something by now anyway.

Any interest as a back end starter?

Mets Being Aggressive; Discussing Niese

By Tim Dierkes [December 7 at 4:58pm CST]

4:58pm: The Mets are hoping to get multiple pieces in return for Niese, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network. They're interested in adding a catcher, an infielder, and prospects.

Castillo (or clevenger) and Barney?

For some reason whenever I hear them talk about the Marlins on MLB Network I'm picturing some boisterous drunken sailor on shore leave throwing cash at strippers.

From Ace's blog:

Yu Darvish is close to being posted, according to Tom Verducci on MLBN tonight. If Darvish is posted, there’s a very strong chance the Cubs bid.

Wish they'd get that process started already.

Rogers just said the same on MLB Network.

Why did I think Darvish was 28 or 29?

I'm more intrigued now. How does the posting fee work? How does a team go about paying that money? Is it up front?

It's described in detail here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_system

Four-days to submit a sealed bid, Japanese team has the right to accept or reject the highest bid but they don't know who it comes from. After they accept the bid, you have 30 days to come to an agreement with the player. Once you do, you pay the entirety of the posting fee immediately.

Thanks.

So where does that money come from? Obviously we don't have $50M in available payroll to pay immediately.

So 5 minutes after the Marlins signed Buerhrle, they were on the phone offering Wilson a 6 year deal. Man, have to admit I'm envious. They went hard after Pujols, are now linked to Prince and already have signed Reyes and Buehrle.

Thanks for Soriano's contract, Hendry.

Ace also said he was told the Cubs prefer Morrison to Sanchez. Personally, I don't see Z as a trade piece for either, no matter how much cash we send, but I'd love to find a way to get Morrison here.

Garza? If they lose out on Wilson, not that I am a huge fan of wanting to trade him.

What's this have to do with anything? Other than irrationally making Cubs fans scared of signing good free agents?

Also, the Marlins signing CJ would be a relief re: Prince... I'm pretty worried about them.

If you're mad about Soriano's contract, you shouldn't be all that envious. It seems like the Marlins will probably be stuck with a couple stinkers a few years from now.

Pure frustration. What I do not understand is if Ricketts gave Theo an open checkbook, why is he not making a serious play for either Pujols or Fielder? We have a glaring hole there. These guys help now and in the future.

What makes you think he isn't? (More in regards to Fielder...as for Pujols, you can see where a 10 year deal might not be in the best interest)

But yet these same Marlins, who play in front of 10,000 people, are rewarding their fans with a team that can compete for a title for years to come. The Cubs sell out and support this team and we get Bryan LaHair stories. Just frustrating.

As presently constructed, the Marlins will be lucky to compete for a one game playoff for the next couple of years at least.

And if they don't win in the next couple years (especially if they do), they'll trade these pieces off. I'm not the least bit envious of Miami. How could you be envious of a team owned by Jeffrey Loria?
