Gus Malzahn couldn't get a better gig than Arkansas St?

Some would argue that OC at Auburn was a better gig. Maybe he knows something we don't and just wanted to get the F out of Dodge. It's a really weird move to me.

It was apparently between him and Weis at KU. Not that KU is anything special, and Ark St. could probably beat KU's ass right now, but still. Seems like a huge step down.

Never question a coach's desire to be the head coach.

Not just prestige-wise but also 2 million dollars wise.

Exactly.

I read an article recently out of Lawrence about Malzahn's wife making some crazy statements to the media in the past and that he may have gotten into some trouble with Chizik. Makes sense given his obvious desire/need to bolt.

EDIT: Apparently this was widely reported. Can't find the article I saw, but here's another:

Maybe he realized that the further he gets from Cam, the more his star dims, so he jumped on whatever HC job he could get.

Doesn't seem like the wife's statements were crazy at all. And this article notes how little role that probably played.

's important to note that Malzahn is an Arkansas guy, though. He went to high school there, walked on to the Arkansas football team and had a successful career coaching high school teams before returning to Arkansas as an offensive coordinator in 2006.

Returning to the state where he began working himself up the coaching ladder shouldn't be viewed as a major surprise. What's more, considering Arkansas State's former head coach made a move to Ole Miss, it isn't like it's a black hole for a coach to enter, either.

Malzahn is one of the leading offensive minds in all of college football. He helped revolutionize no-huddle offenses and garnered attention for using the Wildcat formation.

He'll be out of the spotlight with the Red Wolves, which should allow any ongoing discussions about his wife's thoughts to die off during the offseason.

While they may have played some minor role in the decision-making process between Auburn, Arkansas State and himself, there just isn't enough evidence to state her actions led directly to him becoming the new Red Wolves head man.

I'll check with my Arkansas State guys on Thursday.

Shocker, they're ecstatic. Malzahn contacted the ASU AD last week to inquire about the job. He's making 4x what Freeze was making, took some serious urging from their boosters to bring the salary up to where it was an acceptable move from Malzahn.

I don't. I just assumed he could get a better gig than a school I didn't know existed.

Doesn't explain why he turned down the Vandy job last offseason, though.

Vandy offers no hope for success.

Well, the realization could have come after getting to experience life post-Cam. That said, Malzahn's been a bit of a celebrity coordinator all along, so I don't even know if I believe that line of thinking. Just trying to come up with something that makes some sense.

Word on some PSU message board is that a head coach has been hired; no names yet.

Bizarre. When was the last time a major program hired a coach without even the smallest rumor coming out beforehand?

I'm fully prepared to be underwhelmed

The guy I got this from posted on facebook "FOS/BWI boards saying PSU has hired a coach" and he's definitely not the type to troll facebook. He doesn't really have any inside knowledge but he does use the pay boards on rivals/scout and is one of the biggest PSU fans I know (played qb in high school for a school not far from PSU). He said something about a top 5 salary and people would be "moderately impressed" but again, that is message board chatter so take with the appropriate grains of salt.

Which leads me to believe that your friend thinks it's either Chris Peterson, or some former NFL coach that no one has talked about yet

I think he thought he'd get offered one of the bigger jobs and started scrambling when he wasn't. Early in the process, the KU rivals insider guy had been hearing from people who would know that GM wouldn't consider KU. But when all the jobs started disappearing, all of the sudden we were a real player for him.

Auburn's DC has also left to take the DC position at Central Florida. Makes you wonder if something is up at Auburn. Although it's hard to imagine that they could get in trouble for anything considering that they were completely exonerated out of what appeared to be a pretty obvious and major violation.

I have no idea how the Charlie Weis experiment is going to work out, but he's gotten Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps to both visit KU in his first week or so. Never thought I'd see anything like that.

You've clearly never seen Dayne Crist play, either.
