Hearing rumblings that Fedora may be the leading candidate for the A&M job at the moment, but he has been offered the UNC job & they aren't going to wait too long for an answer. Louisville is blocking us from interviewing Strong and supposedly Mark Richt may be interviewed, as well. He may just be trying to squeeze more money out of UGA while he has some leverage. Bo Pelini allegedly expressed interest in the job, but I don't see that ever happening. At this point I would guess it's either Fedora or Sumlin.

OK St's OC Monken interviewed for the Illinois job. I'm starting to get real antsy about this.

Antsy? Didn't Zook get fired like a week ago?

You never can tell with coaches, but everything about Monken just screams red flag to me. Why would he even be on the list?

Well he's from Wheaton and the DVC produces talent every year. He'll likely get Wes Lunt to decommit from Ok St. He's also spent time in the NFL, the SEC and the Big 12, which I presume would help Illinois in recruiting SEC/Big 12 leftovers out of the South and Texas. I'm concerned that he is a little green, having spent only one year as a coordinator, and would prefer either Narduzzi or Chryst for that reason.

I've heard that Chryst doesn't really like to recruit, which at a place like Illinois is fatal even for a head coach. Not so sure on Narduzzi's penchant for hitting the road. So at this point I think I'd rank the three coordinators (1) Narduzzi (2) Chryst (3) Monken.

As I said earlier, Sumlin is the clear number one, but I think he's a pipe dream.

UMass appears to have hired ND's OC/QB coach Charley Molnar.

The last two ND assistants to get hired into the MAC were 1) a domestic-abusing wackjob and 2) a train wreck. So we'll see. I'm not a huge fan of Molnar.

FFS, Jim Mora Jr now is the leading candidate for UCLA. What a joke of a search.

I guess I'm hoping for Dave Christensen or Troy Calhoun. Not feeling Sonny Dykes.

TT, Butters...thoughts on Christensen as a HC?

You think they'd take the hit of hiring Christensen? I've seen a good bit of "Christensen coached at Mizzou, RAAAAGE" chatter.

I think he would do a pretty decent job. He's a very good offensive mind, and he's had success with a couple QBs in a pretty bad situation for Wyoming. He's familiar with Big 12 country obviously, but was never considered an ace recruiter. Given what we know, I think he's less likely than some of the alternatives to crater like Gill did, but I don't think it's likely that he'd be able to elevate KU past Glen Masondom. His defensive coordinator would be a very important hire, probably one that would define his tenure.

At this point, we're gonna take a hit no matter who we hire. The drooling masses would only be satisfied with a big name like Leach or Fedora, but they don't realize big name candidates aren't exactly busting down the door in Lawrence.

Besides, the people who have a beef with Christensen because of his ties to Mizzou are idiots. They're the same ones who think Zenger will tank any realignment meetings because he went to KSU and wants to make sure he takes care of his alma mater.

I think his ceiling is higher than Mason, but he has a similar rebuilding project as Mason did. But Mason actually did pretty well, all things considered.

I'd prefer DC over Dykes and Koetter. I'd probably want Calhoun the most of the realistic targets, but we'll have to wait for the big dogs to eat before we find out if we have a shot at him.

Are you talking about a guy with brain damage as a whack job?

Yeah, the Mason thing wasn't necessarily an insult. I like Christensen, but I don't think he's the guy to elevate a program like say, Malzahn might be able to. On the other hand, Christensen is less likely to have his tenure go down in flames with 10 loss seasons and/or NCAA sanctions. He's the safety school of coaches.

allegedly we've been talking to malzhan, but why would he take the gig? He could have any number of better gigs in the next couple of years. I'm actually surprised his name hasn't been floating around more this coaching cycle.

Rumor going around that UCLA's AD met with Jim Tressel. Guh?

If he doesn't get slapped with show cause I think he'd be a great hire. I would have loved him at A&M.

I have been telling Illinois fans that they probably couldn't do better than Tressel. I am not saying he is innocent or didn't deserve to be fired, but I think that what he did is probably happening in most of your big time football programs. It is not like Tressel was actually paying players or hiring others to do his players schoolwork. I think there is no doubt Illinois would be a better program if they hired Tressel.

I'd take him but there's no chance of that happening.
