It's going to be tougher to get the top notch FA, as most of them will be extended by their current team or possibly traded and then extended. I'm starting to think extending Garza is our best option. It wouldn't surprise me to see us add one large contract next offseason, but my guess is we're expecting to have enough chips from our system to make the Gio, Cahill, Latos type deals from this past offseason. Obviously, no one knows who may be available then, but I figure some guys will be anyway.

Here's what ABTY7 had to say about it at PSD

It's simple guys: They wanted him- Bad. 6/40 is a big contract for an IFA- the largest ever offered to a non Japanese IFA. A's offer was 6/36 for the better part of a week- Katz and Cespedes went back to Oakland and said we'll sign for 36 over 4 and Beane pulled the trigger. The Cubs, Marlins and everyone else wasn't even really given a chance to counter. Whatever reason, Cespedes decided Oakland was the best fit for him and made it happen... but please don't twist this: the Cubs wanted him very, very badly.

I believe it. The news that We were making a major push for Soler came out not too long before The A's landed Cespedes, so It's more than likely that Theo knew that it was happening which caused them to quickly turn his attention to Soler as quickly and aggressively as he did. This isn't to say that we weren't very interested in Soler all along, but with the knowledge that the A's, or at least somebody was close to landing Cespedes could have expedited the process.

Can someone tell me where the PSD boards are? I keep seeing them referenced but have no idea what people are talking about.

From some of the comments both Cespedes and his agent have made I think that a big priority was not just the money but a chance to be in a MLB starting lineup opening day. I have a feeling they looked and saw that the A's gave them the best chance to do that and it is probably why they gave the A's the inside track on making the final deal.

Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was willing to sign with the Cubs and had reason to believe that he might wind up in Chicago, writes Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Ultimately, the Cubs offered six years for $36MM while the Athletics offered that same number for four years. The Cuban star also said that he was seeking either a four-year deal or one that was for eight years or more. Through a translator, Cespedes said that he probably would have wound up in Chicago had the Cubs offered him the same deal before the A's did.

The fact that that money is available tells me there's no reason that we shouldnt end up with Soler. I'm normally against outbidding yourself, but this is the perfect situation to do so and he could end up the flagship of the farm system and the Epstein Era.

None of that is really new. You mean he would have signed the deal he ended up signing if another team offered it first? That is just crazytalk.

That said, I can't blame the Cubs for not offering more AAV than they did. Dude is gonna hit the majors by June in all likelihood, so that's really just four years at a high price for an unknown. Not similar to the Concepcion deal or Soler's likely deal at all. And I don't think he's worth the extra risk, honestly.

Is $9 million a year for 4 years really that high for a big market team with next to no big contracts on the books? Cespedes is a very high upside guy who would only have to be worth 2 WAR a year each year to be worth his contract. His defense alone might do that. Considering his age, our desperate need for impact talent, and how difficult it is to get reasonably priced players in FA, I think it would have been a very good gamble.

Agreed. It made lots of sense. Im not really sure why the cubs werent willing to go four years. Seems like a no brainer considering his defense, raw power, and alternatives. If you remember though the cubs seemed liked they were in the drivers seat with this deal basically until the day he signed with the A's. Maybe Theo thought they were bluffing about a mystery team?

Also CSC Bean has already come out and said that Cespedes will be the starting centerfielder for the year.

Count me as glad the Cubs didn't make that deal. Anyone want to bet on this one? I think that Oakland's going to regret the deal.

I predict it ends comparably to Fukudome's run with the Cubs. I don't think he lives up to the hype or contract, but he still ends up being a halfway decent player in his own right.

+1

To max out in Oakland I think Cespedes is going to have to show to be a very strong gap hitter, because that home park alone will get to him otherwise. Would not be surprised to see him really struggle this year overall...

Now my boy Darvish down in Texas? That guy is going to be worth all of that hype they poured on him.

Just what the Cubs need...A FA signing who stops and stares at the HR he just hit for his 70 win team to make it 5-2 Other Guys.

OTOH: Monster shot and the guy is probably a beast.
