I really hope they can find a way to pin some type of criminal charge on Paterno as well.

That would be excessive. And very unlikely.

Unlikely, yeah. Excessive. Nope. His actions could have stopped this all. I would love to see the old man [expletive] himself in a prison cell.

He's not legally required to report it to the authorities. Unless something more damning comes out, he's not going to be charged with a crime. And he shouldn't be.

I think this just shows you how much of a mistake it is to have a senile old man be the face of the entire sports department while not actually doing any coaching. This is the type of situation where you talk about accountability (as opposed to with baseball players who don't run out every ground ball) and there was none in that organization. What a freaking pathetic way to end his reign. It's a shame. Sandusky is the scum of the earth but Peterno and everybody else who had any knowledge of this situation completely let down the Penn State community and of course, especially every kid that got assaulted after they were aware it could be going on.

i think he let down every kid that was ever assaulted by sandusky, not just those that were assaulted afterwards.

Yeah, you're probably right. Instead of forcing them to struggle with the notion of reporting what happened to them on their own he could have brought it all to light much sooner, presumably taking a major weight off of their collective shoulders.

yeah, and made investigating it a lot easier, too.

it's easier to come forward when you're young, as opposed to married with kids later on.

Members of the board of directors at the Second Mile Charity and Camp (founded by Jerry Sandusky, used by Sandusky to funnel victims to his clutches) include: Joe Paterno, Matt Millen, Andy Reid, Mark Wahlburg, Cal Ripken Jr, Dick Vermeil, Franco Harris, Arnold Palmer and Lou Holtz.

While I'm sure these guys feel awful to be involved with anything regarding this creep (let alone the charity he used in such a repulsive way), there's no evidence that any of these guys had knowledge of the acts. I'd imagine some lower level employees of the charity had some knowledge though. Ugh.

Whoa. I mean, there's that 10-year period where he didn't stop his friend from raping young boys. So maybe not his entire life was a success.

Finally being forced to step down after not actually being a coach for years bc of your failure to stop abuse isn't really a terrible ending. It just sounds like you're feeling a little sorry for Joe.

Part of me feels sorry for him. He can only blame Sandusky and himself here, but I do pity the man for being in the situation he's put himself in.

I guess I don't have a lot of pity for him, at least not in the sense that I feel sorry for him. His inaction resulted directly in child abuse. He could have prevented it easily, there was no intervening factor that shields him from blame. If these kids were local, they probably held JoePa in this almost god-like esteem. And the man completely let them down. Clearly Sandusky is ultimately responsible, but Paterno isn't worthy of sympathy.

I don't have a lot of pity, but I can't help but think some of this is related to his diminished capacities. I'm not sure a 50 year old Paterno screws this up as badly. But ultimately you can't demand to keep your job as head coach and de facto boss and let this go on.

Yeah I just thought it was pretty crazy. This was a high profile charity that he started for the clear purpose of sexually exploiting adolescent boys. It's clear that this guy was very, very connected and there are a lot of famous, influential people who I'm sure are absolutely gobsmacked about all of this.

Along with a whole lot of other people who were aware that abuse was occurring or had occurred, and didn't stop it. Or are you just in favor of making up charges against elderly football coaches?

Hey Truf, I hope Australia is nice.

it's lovely. quite a bit better than milwaukee. you should consider a lifestyle change.

Thanks to him, several other boys were raped.

whoa really? because the grand jury indictment includes only one sexual assault after 2002. if you are withholding information i suggest turning that over to the police immediately.

He reported it to this board, fulfilling his legal obligation.

That's not how it works, unless you're saying that the board administration is legally obligated to report it. So I hope Tim contacts the authorities and tells them that a member of this community has information on several incidents of child abuse during the past few years.

I thought we decided we would just ban da Bum instead of reporting him and never bring it up again.

I'm in favor of anyone that knew of children getting abused getting what they deserve. Again, yeah, legally probably nothing will happen. But they are all morally bankrupt.

Where has that guy been?

JoePa not going to step down, according to his son. That entire family are a bunch of pathetic cowards.

in fairness to truffle, maybe he thinks paterno was just waiting for the right time to go to the authorities.

i mean, truffle is used to waiting ten years for things to come out.

ten years is a bit long.

85 year old people can't take this kind of stress. I'm officially selecting Joe Paterno in the first round of the 2012 dead pool.
