If all he cared about was making Francona look good, he probably would have interviewed him to keep up the charade.

I disagree - interviewing him would have given away the fact that it was just a charade. Theo doesn't need to interview a guy he's worked with for years to know how that guy thinks.

Yes, I heard Theo say that too.

Well it makes sense. I would find a Francona interview to be a waste of time regardless of what Theo said. Why would you interview a guy you know backwards and forwards? Only for show.

Right. So if Francona was only being talked about for show, perhaps they'd have an interview with him.

I'm not sure how this would work, but I wonder if the Cubs perceived interest in Sveum could be used as leverage in the compensation talks with the Red Sox.

"We know you want Sveum, so we will back off him if you will accept this reduced compensation package."

There's been a lot of hunbub today about the Cubs interviewing Sveum a second time at the GM meetings. What was actually said was that they would have conversations with him since he would be there to talk to the RedSox, but no formal sit down interview. I don't think it means much of anything. He's there, so they are talking to him.

Sveum to meet with Henry, Werner and Lucchino tomorrow. #RedSox

Sounds like they are close to hiring him. Cubs will be meeting with him Wensday.

#cubs will talk to dale sveum wed. Sveum is coming n for 2nd interview with #RedSox

I don't know why, but I don't really like Sveum. Like, at all. It's unjustified and irrational, but I just don't like him for the job.

yeah, i find it hard to like someone who thinks that being stoic is some sort of positive quality worth having

(@CSNMooney) #Cubs will meet with Sveum again. Hoyer says Maddux still weighing family concerns. Francona viewed as an extreme long shot.

#Cubs GM Hoyer says no manager deadline, but "we want to move this into decision-making mode."

Any possibility they've settled on Maddux, but are waiting for him to make a decision? Since they aren't doing a second round of interviews, it would seem they have a good idea of who they like more than who and it would seem they'd make a decision pretty quickly - unless they were waiting for one of the candidates to actually accept the job.

That's what I've been suspecting.

That would explain chatting with Sveum again and interviewing Hale - trying to draw out the process a bit so that it doesn't look like they're just sitting around doing nothing.

The Cubs might be in situation where they have no choice but to go with Tito. What if Sveum takes the Boston job and Maddux decides he doesn't want to manage. Then you are down to the bench coaches of Philly and Boston(neither seem like serious candidates) and Sandy Alomar Jr. who made an ass of himself with his interview comments.

So why is Maddux still weighing things with his family? He's had time to think about it and if he really wants to manage he would have made a decision.

If the Cubs indeed want him they shouldn't have to wait any longer. The other manager openings are just as far if not farther in distance for him.

Perhaps he really doesn't want the job and is content where he's at?

Or perhaps he's seeing the Cubs go nutso signing management types and figures he can milk them for more money if they really want him.

Not likely.

Francona has told CSNNE that he will not manage next season.

"I've talked to Theo numerous times,'' said Francona. "We both know each other well enough where we can can be honest with each other. I don't think it's the right opportunity.

"I need to take a step back and re-energize. That's probably in my best interest right now. In fairness to myself, it's the best thing to do.

I don't know, I think MacKanin is a legit candidate. He might not he their top choice at this moment but I definitely think he's a serious candidate and the Cubs will take a long look at hiring him should Maddux and Sveum be unavailable.

I don't see how someone could take those quotes any other way, especially considering the report that he was nearly begging Theo for the job, and interviewed with St. Louis and didnt get the job. He's saving face I guess.
