Posted this in the Oswalt thread and I'll post it again:

In his previous nine years as a full time starter he averaged 208 IP/year and only had under 210 IP three times (127 -03, 208.2 - 08, 181.1 - 09).

His DL stint and his increasing age are certainly matters of concern, but he's been remarkably durable throughout his career. I'd love to have an entire staff of pitchers who are that "injury prone". Following a decade of service how many pitchers do you know that haven't had a few minor injuries?

Concerning his most recent problem, I don't think those back issues (spasms) are something that have had too much of a negative impact on him considering that coming back from the DL he only pitched under 6 IP one time in 10 starts and that was 5.2 IP. Small sample size no doubt, but his history of back issues aren't something that have hampered him all that much looking at his career.

The problem is that, as with any physical ailment, as he gets older his back issues are increasingly more likely to become a problem - and perhaps a major one at that. Couple that with how many innings he's thrown over the course of his career, and he's a major risk of decline and/or injury.

I should have said injury risk instead of injury prone, though.

Wasn't aware of that. Yeah that's not good. Thought his problem was just spasms. I'd still take him on a one or even a two year deal if he was cheap enough.

I might take him on that as well, but a lot of my lack of interest in him comes from the belief I have that he'll get at least two and probably 3 years on the market. And the money will almost certainly be $10+ million, maybe closer to $15 million. Somebody - or maybe even a few teams - will overlook the age and injury risk and pay for his past production. I don't want the Cubs to be that team.

If we're going to go with an old, likely to decline veteran, let's go with Buerhle. Ideally we avoid both, though.

Yes I'd definitely prefer Buehrle at this point as well for obvious reasons.

The Cubs would have to be the proverbial last team on Earth to get Buehrle to sign with them. Even then, he might retire instead.

Just let this idea go.

Why? Have you seen any evidence that he wouldnt sign with the Cubs other than he grew up a Cardinal fan? If he likes living in Chicago, and the Cubs are offering more than the Sox and the Cardinals arent interested, he will sign here.

Well there were several quotes earlier in this thread (I think, or maybe another) about how much he despises playing at Wrigley. Something about how he would probably sign with the Cardinals even though it would mean 3 trips a year to Wrigley.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like he kinda despises the Cubs too. Not hard to imagine a guy that grew up cheering for the Cards and then spent his career with the White Sox would have a little Cub hatred ingrained. That part is all my speculation, though.

Buehrle is still a pretty good pitcher. Yes, I think he'd sign with the Cubs if he had no other options. But, he will. So, he won't be a Cub.

Works for me. Now let's go get CJ Wilson ... or a W-Y Chen/Francis duo.

jim edmonds would never ever sign with the cubs

Edmonds left the Cards under bad circumstances.

And he had nowhere else to go. Many (inc. me) thought his career was over. Who knew he just needed to lay off the concussion meds...

buehrle is a servicable number 4 now adays. but he is not what you want if you are planning a deep playoff run. give him a 2 year as a stopgap.

I agree he's nothing close to a real #1, but he's still a pretty good pitcher. Much better than what you're projecting.

buerhle is about as close to a sure thing as you can get when it comes to giving you quality innings over a full season.

Bah .... sounds like just speculation by Olney, but if he's right this makes the Yankees more likely to make an all-out run at Wilson.

Yankees did due diligence today and talked to Mark Buehrle's agent, but it's still highly unlikely they take a serious run at him.

actually going off his numbers, he is more of a 2/3. he's not a #1, and certainly not a 4. he's about as solid as it gets and he'll be a pretty good 4-5 year contract. you can count on his 200+ IP and close to 15 wins a season.

And he never did.

"May 9, 2008: Released by the San Diego Padres.

May 14, 2008: Signed as a Free Agent with the Chicago Cubs."

That's basically a 180 from your previous post! Which one do you REALLY believe!?!?!?!!!

I still think he'd rather play for the Cubs than the Royals or Pirates

You know, I think the Royals have just as good of a chance of winning the AL Central as the Cubs do the NL. Pirates may have gotten a bit lucky this year, but the Royals aren't quite the "at least we aren't the Royals" joke anymore.
