I understand the appeal of a jumbotron from a marketing perspective; they allow for a lot more advertising sales. From a fan perspective, I don't really care. Do people really like kiss cams and animated trivia games that much?

What does that have to do with a jumbotron?

Make up your mind.

Jumbotrons are worthless from a fan in attendance perspective.

MLB doesn't:

Clubs must continue to use good judgment not to 'show up' the umpires, incite the crowd or distract players, but this admonition does not preclude showing close plays. Close plays may be shown, using good judgment and all plays must be reviewed by the scoreboard operator prior to being replayed on the scoreboard (and video monitors).

Replays showing called balls or strikes from the current game or series, brushback pitches, or any instance where an umpire has clearly made an incorrect call are also forbidden by MLB. Plays may be shown once and slow-motion or freeze frames are not allowed.

I don't like all the crap that comes with a video board. I hate when attention is constantly drawn to the board and away from the field. I feel it severely deteriorates the experience. However, if it means the Cubs win more then put one up.

I would like something similar in size to Comerica Park's video board, only nicer. It's a bit outdated. However, the board doesn't draw the entire stadiums attention.

I remember at Game 5 of the NLDS, they refused to show replays of the Lofton "trap."

And, IIRC, at Wrigley, in the 03 Cards series... the second game of the double header, when Alou hit the "foul" ball that would've been a bases clearing double, they did not even show the replays on the TVs in the stadium. I had to make a phone call to find out if it was fair/foul.

Who gives a [expletive] about experience, its about maximizing your revenue that can be put back into the team. With that said, I highly doubt they will replace the scoreboard, nor would I want that. But, the point of a jumbotron isn't replays or kiss cams, its about advertising dollars.

Yeah, that's fine from a non-fan in attendance point of view. But while there the jumbotrons do try and distract to take away from the action on the field. I prefer to not have all that nonsense. What I prefer most is maximizing the Cubs chances, and if that means a jumbotron, so be it.

I always thought they could put two screens on either side of the scoreboard.

if that blocked the roof tops then why could we not have one GIANT jumbo-tron

on top of the scoreboard...

make it retractable and have it up during batting practice and lowered during the game if you want.

or retract it after the game and have it up all the time...

I'd like to see them keep the scoreboard, but also figure out how to install a video board (or boards) without the rooftop vultures keeping it from happening.

I feel the urge to bow down and worship before that.

Lowered during the game completely defeats the purpose, but I like the concept.

I'd like it to have one of those sexy 70's movie feels to it, with a couple knobs and buttons on the wall that raise the screen and a liquor cabinet comes out of the wall.

I've always thought the AL side, like davearm suggested, of the scoreboard could go for a Jumbotron.

I'd totally support a Jumbotron. I just don't want some annoying announcer interviewing fans and stupidity like that between innings like I've seen at Miller Park.

Jumbotron=stupid antics between innings

I like Dr. Cub's idea and would be able to live with a video screen on top of the old scoreboard. Ideally I'd just like the old scoreboard to be able to show the scores from all the MLB games, not just select ones.

Blah, what a crappy view behind Wrigley. Really wish they could have built a new stadium where Cabrini is (was) so they'd have the skyline rocking things.

That would be very ugly, and not very jumbo. I think you need to keep the scoreboard and do the jumbotrons off to the side.

Yes I was suggesting a freestanding video board, immediately adjacent to the current (unaltered) scoreboard.

Yep, there is plenty of room in the Left Field area to put up a nice video board while keeping the original scoreboard in tact.

Looks like any jumbotron to the side of the existing scoreboard might make a few rooftop partners "obstructed view". That said, Tom Ricketts is the guy for the job.

Tons of room in straightaway LF though. Surely why that location was chosen for the Toyota sign.

Put a video board there with a Toyota logo on the top.

Looking at the picture posted earlier, though, many of those rooftops you have identified don't actually have a view onto the playing surface anyway, particularly the one's in deep RC.

I don't know how the current scoreboard is attached and anchored, but, what about sliding it left and putting up a similar sized jumbotron to the right? From the playing surface view above, it appears it could be done, at least from an aesthetic viewpoint. Though admittedly, maybe not when considering what and where they would need to attach, or where the current one attaches and is anchored.
