He's versatile in that he sucks in a lot of ways.

Excellent was the more questionable adjective to me.

My thought is that teams could save a lot of money by just figuring out where he got the bat and buying it directly. Cut out the middle man.

I honestly stopped reading at versatile. I thought you were joking with "excellent." You weren't. Holy [expletive].

Athletics Acquire Seth Smith

By Tim Dierkes [January 16 at 12:33pm CST]

The Athletics acquired outfielder Seth Smith from the Rockies for righty Guillermo Moscoso and lefty Josh Outman, according to the Rockies' Twitter feed.  The A's are a somewhat surprising match for Smith, but they did need corner outfield help after losing Josh Willingham and David DeJesus to free agency.  Josh Reddick and Coco Crisp round out Oakland's outfield.

I wonder what happens to his respectable .275./348./485 line when he goes to from Coors to Oakland and their weak lineup. Also, now that they've acquired an entire outfield over the past month, I wonder if that's any indication that they're ready to move Michael Taylor. Definitely seems like a Theo target, however he's more likely to cost prospects than the big league expendables we'd prefer to move.

Russ Salzberg, who is a stereotypically obnoxious Bronx sports anchor, reported on the Yankees signing Phil Hughes and he kept saying, "it's a non-guaranteed contract", I don't have any idea what he was talking about.

maybe phil hughes is not guaranteeing that he will be effective?

Technically, arbitration awards are non-guaranteed. The team can get out of the contract if it can demonstrate significant decline during ST. Recall that the Padres invoked this clause years ago to dump our old friend Todd Walker.

Not sure if this is what is happening with Hughes, but it's a logical possibility.

What the hell happened to Walker? He had a very good bat for a utility infielder and I don't remember him being particularly bad on defense. He just kind of dissapeared after a short, forgettable stint with the A's.

He was 35 years old and coming off a sub-replacement level season and a below average one. He also had an awful defensive reputation and wanted more than a bench role near the league minimum salary.

Pretty much exactly what happened to Jermaine Dye.

What happens to 80% of players -- he got real old real quick.

Oh God, the Jermaine Dye saga. When he was looking for work, I remember people calling in to Boers and Bernstein griping about it being racial despite the fact that he was A. coming off an awful season and B. rejecting offers from several teams including the Giants who offered him 3 mil which he didn't feel was enough money to move his family and the Cubs, with whom he didn't think he'd get enough PT.

Todd Walker may have been a defensive liability, but he still made one of the most amazing plays I've seen at 3B in the last 10 years when he was with the Padres. Wish I could find video of it

Francisco Rodriguez signs for 1 year, $8 million with the Brewers. So much for laughing at them for offering him arbitration.

Wow, he was really good for them last year.

I think I'm gonna go dig through the old Jermaine Dye thread. That could be fun.

Edit:

I thought they Dye threads were longer than that. Disappointing.

You did make a few funny comments about how you thought he was on pace for an "easy 40-50" HR the year before, though.

I do seem to remember him starting incredibly strong and completely collapsing. He did finish the '09 season with a .793 OPS and 27 HR despite a brutal 2nd half, so he must have had a pretty good first half.

Jamie Moyer continues to spit in God's face:

Rockies signed LHP Jamie Moyer to a minor league contract.

Colorado seems like the absolute worst place for a veteran pitcher to attempt a comeback, but Moyer likely didn't have a ton of options to choose from. The 49-year-old lefty is coming off Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery but should be back to 100 percent health by the start of spring training. The Rockies are likely to give him a crack at a starting rotation spot.

I was randomly thinking of his superman slide against Oakland this morning. Specifically, Pat's call: "Listen to these fans!"

A minor league contract. At 49.

I'm fully convinced that he hates his family.

Probably means nothing. I'd be awfully surprised if Moyer actually pitches in the minors. More likely, he'll be gone if he doesn't make the Rox.

How close is he to 300 wins?

He'd need to pitch into his mid 50's to reach 300. And he'd need to do it effectively and with a [expletive] load of run support. Otherwise he'd need to go into his 60's
