Alfredo Amezaga to #Cubs on minor-league deal. Currently playing shortstop for Obregon in Mexican League playoffs. #MLB

Looks like Bianchi's replacement.

More like Andres Blanco's.

Is Blanco even in the system anymore?

He's been gone for two years.

He was with the Rangers last I heard. My point is that Bianchi was a somewhat intriguing prospect. Amezaga is a guy who can play short stop.

I just hope that he's not Castro's replacement.

Mariners Close To Deal For "Young Impact Hitter"

By Mark Polishuk [January 13 at 6:06pm CST]

The Mariners have moved closer to a trade that would net them a "young impact hitter," reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.  A source calls the trade "significant" and says Brandon League is not part of the deal (both links via Twitter).

Kevin Goldstein adds via Twitter that he has no idea who it is, but every prospect in their system was on the table at or point. Sounds interesting.

Rumblings that it's Michael Pineda to the Yanks for Montero

Huge. I was thinking Logan Morrison or B.J. Upton, if he's still remotely considered an impact hitter.

BJ Upton has posted 4 or more WAR 4 of the last 5 seasons (and 2 of the last 3). His 4.1 WAR last season would have ranked only behind Matt Garza on the Cubs.

This myth that BJ Upton is some sort of bust is absurd. He may not have lived up to his considerable upside, but he's still a very good player.

that may be true, but it's pretty damn hard to consider a guy who's posting a line of .240/.325/.425/.750 to be an impact hitter.

i think we should probably stop caring so much about impact "hitters" and focus more on guys who are impact players.

the original report was that the m's were acquiring a "young impact hitter." bj upton is not someone that really leaps to mind when i hear that.

I didn't say he was a bust, but he's simply not an impact bat. I get his value as a center fielder, but if someone were to move him to a corner that what happens to his WAR?

well what the hell are they going to do that for? "hey if you move starlin Castro to first base all of a sudden his bat doesn't look so hot."

It would soon

Not if he gets locked up.

He might have to make the switch to catcher

I would assume he could pitch, he has money.

I'm far too lazy to run the numbers, but I don't think it would hurt him very much at all. It might even help him.

Being a plus-plus defender in a corner would go a long way towards offsetting the slight increase in expected offensive production.

Seriously though... how many starting CFers out there that would push BJ Upton to a corner? It's not like he's just an "average" CFer. He's a plus defender there already. It would take a guy like Bourjos to move him to the corner.
