lol, the news that Ryno won't be manager comments are always good comedy over at chicagosports.com

ToddInABQ at 3:58 PM November 2, 2011

Cubs will screw this up again and Ryno will get hired by the Cardinals of all teams then I will never be a Cubs fan ever again.

pfpowers at 3:52 PM November 2, 2011

TYPICAL STUPID CUBS MOVE. Hire Ryno idiots. Ryno and Cardinals will sweep Cubs.

ChicagoAnnie at 3:32 PM November 2, 2011

If the Cardinals hire Sandberg, the Lou Brock trade will become the second worst mistake in Cub baseball history.

The next couple years will be building years anyway, a good chance for Ryno to get all the experience he'll need for 2014 or 2015.

Because if we don't get Ryno now, we lose him forever.

juanita b at 2:52 PM November 2, 2011

I can't believe it. The Cubs are AGAIN ignoring Ryne Sandberg. Someday, they are going to regret this decision when Ryne Sandberg coaches a winning team to the World Series.

Sure, I think experience as a coach is over rated. If you know the game, and you know how to play the game, I think you can be successful. As a manager, the staff you surround yourself with is just as important as your independent duties.

I know the game, I know how to play . . . would I make a good manager?

Sure. There's a ton of little leagues looking for people like you.

Arguing over whether or not Sandberg would be a good manager is a moot point. He's not going to be the Manager, he's already been told that by Theo, and the Cubs from what I heard have 3 candidates in mind already who have major league experience and are available.

I'm exaggerating a bit, but I never particularly liked him once I was old enough not to just love him for being a Cub. He was like Ryan Theriot in how he thought way too much of himself, especially on defense because of his overrated fielding percentage. His HOF speech really rubbed me the wrong way.

do people really have issue with sandberg not diving for baseballs during his playing career? i'm not calling you out specifically, but this isn't the first time i've heard those types of comments from people here.

Part of what kept his fielding percentage so high during his playing days was a complete inability (or unwillingness) to range for difficult balls.

Same. But I only really saw his crappy last two years. I'm sure if I saw him be one of the best players in the league for 8 or 9 years, my opinion would be much different.

I probably saw every at bat he ever had before his first retirement. My opinion of him was extremely high at the time but has done nothing but go downhill since.

That was a widespread view of him back in his playing days and in the discussions of his error-less streak and comparisons with other great middle infielders.

he was the best 2nd basemen in the MLB's.

I can't read his mind, but I always got the impression it was that one. The guy practically treated his fielding percentage the way this board treats pictures of Theo Epstein standing outside Wrigley.

I should say I'd be more like the people who like the player but hate the post-career guy.

As it is, I only have the latter.

My opinion of him as a player is that he's still my most favorite Cub ever. I don't want that to ever change, so I don't really want him near the Cubs management staff.

However, he's not even on the long list of candidates, let alone the short list, so maybe we can talk more now about who will be the manager.

There certainly seems to be a rash of recent posts from cards fans who struggle with plural personal pronoun usage.

i remember hearing about it on talk radio growing up as a kid, but never thought much of it. i guess it was more of a deal than i originally imagined.

Do you feel the same about Barry Sanders? Just curious?

Why is this a big deal?

Posted (edited)

He retired in the middle of a season, but actually did retire and didn't just freak out.

............and that makes him equal to Z in what way?

Not equal, worse. People say Z quit when he said he retired, but he didn't really as it was just an emotional outburst. Sandberg actually followed through on quitting on his team like the cold calculated me-first jerk that he is.

Me first jerk? You mean Z, right?

Punch Barrett? Check

Yell at DLEE in front of his teammates for (gulp) not getting to (diving) for a ball down the first base line?

Have hissy fits and verbally blast the player on the field when errors are made behind him?

Yes, yes, Z is clearly a model teammate and not a me first jerk.

So we agree: Ryne Sandberg and Carlos Zambrano should be evaluated similarly as teammates.

a better comparison for Sandberg might be Sosa. this Z comparison its pretty [expletive] nuts.

Zambrano told a teammate he was going to retire but then changed his mind, and for this the vast majority think he should never put on a Cubs uniform again.

Ryne Sandberg actually did quit on his team in the middle of the season. But a very large group of people have nothing but glowing things to say about him and think he should lead this team.

When did he say Z was a great teammate and not a me-first jerk?
