I really don't like what the Cubs are doing here. I like that they took the courtesy to let Ryno know that he won't be a candidate, but why not? He is as qualified as anyone else who they would hire. What do we really have to lose?

Welcome to the forum.

Because there are much better candidates available?

He's probably not as qualified as the person they wind up hiring will be.

Would it be safe to say if we had Mike Maddux managing and Greg Maddux as pitching coach that our pitching staff would be [expletive] awesome?

I think the guys who will actually be on that staff would be a bit more important than the manager and pitching coach.

I'm just hoping we can put together a staff that can match Dave Duncan's ability to squeeze diamonds out of turds

Sandberg has zero major league coaching experience, which means he's less qualified than anyone else they would hire.

For one, Ryno would be a terrible big league manager and I think they know it.

Because having seen Sandberg manage throughout the minors and likely feedback from some within the Cubs and Phillies minor league developmental staff as well as opposing managers/coaches, they felt Sandberg's strengths and weaknesses don't match up with the strengths that the Cubs' FO is looking for.

If whoever they hire is equally qualified as Ryne Sandberg, I'll be pretty pissed.

Like who? Just because someone managed and sucked, doesn't mean their experience alone should give them a job. I just don't see "experience" being as imporant to an MLB manager as it is to an equivalent position in another sport. He'll have a couple years before we are contending for a world series anyway, so he will have time to get acclimated.

Won't be too long before Sandberg wants nothing to do with us.

It would be too bad if relations were really severed that badly, but it's not the Cubs' fault if he wants to be a petulant little bitch.

While I agree, I will say I think the difference between a manager that overmanages and someone like Weaver in the grand scheme of things is probably further down the list than many assume.

While Quade was a poor in-game manager, his inability to take charge of the team and inconsistency with veteran and younger players was more damning than any love of small-ball.

MLB trade rumors says the cardinals asked and were granted to interview Sandberg. If Sandberg goes to STL, I think Epstein should pack his bags and get out of Chicago already. That would be horrible and I dont think I would still be a cub fan after that. I just ordered a throwback Sandberg jersey a few days ago!

What a shame that will be.

Theo treated with him respect. He does not deserve the job because he was a Cubs great. The only thing that Theo owes the Cubs or its fans (knowledgeable and meatball) is to find a manager that is going to produce the most wins.

Ryno has been a minor league manager since 06. He knows the game, and from all accounts is a talented teacher.

As long as we are talking experience, who are we talking?

I hope we hire Martinez and seal the deal.

Theo's just all class. Contacting Ryne and the Phillies to let him know he's not in contention. Love everything about this.

Eh? Where did I miss that info?

Talking about it on B&B. I believe from David Haugh's twitter

I want someone with the same mindset as the Cubs FO, obviously they thought otherwise. It could be a bench, pitching, base, or hitting coach not only a past manager.

I'm hoping for somebody who has only been a minor league base coach since no earlier than 07.

What do we really have to lose?

Aside from Ryno winning a world series with our biggest and most hated rival, nothing. And if that happened, the Cubs will be haunted with it forever. That said, I fully trust Theo and Jed to make the right move here. If they feel there is a better candidate, you trust they will get the right guy.

Not only that, it's only an interview at this point for Ryno.

The only thing I do not like about this is that it has the potential to blow up if Sandberg's team wins before the Cubs do.

I love how he mentioned that he just ordered a Sandberg jersey.

A little trigger happy there, eh?

There's two different mind-sets between a minor league manager and a MLB manager. Quade was a very good minor league manager as was Kimm, they're really not in a position nor is Sandberg to set him up to possibly fail. It's not a good fit.

I bought a $300 Mitchell and Ness 1984 Ryno throwback from Wrigleyville Sports less than two weeks ago. Doesn't change the fact that I believe he would be in over his head here as the manager. Or anywhere else for that matter. I want somebody with MLB experience. Tito please! If not Tito, give Dave Martinez a chance. Being a Ryno fan shouldn't have anything to do with this. I love Michael Jordan. Doesn't mean that I would want him coaching the Bulls... some fans are just idiots.
