If we're going to go with a guy who hasn't been a Major League manager before, we're going to go with Ryne Sandberg unless he refuses to come back.

Not if it's someone who's been a Major League coach before. Sandberg doesn't yet have that on his resume, and it's a plausible distinction.

I don't think there's any way Sandberg can come back as a coach. If the Cubs are going to bring him into the fold it's going to have to be as manager. Making him a coach or even a minor league manager is going to be putting undue pressure on whoever is hired as manager because the local media and meatball fans are going to be screaming for Sandberg every time the Cubs hit a rough patch.

I agree, but that's a separate discussion. I was saying the fact that Sandberg hasn't yet been a big league coach theoretically gives Epstein/Hoyer a distinction to which to point, which would allow them to hire someone else who hasn't yet been a big league manager, like Martinez.

Mike Maddux is under contract for a few more years as pitching coach in Texas and the only way I would see him coming to the Cubs is as manager.

I think that's what the rumor is. Theo targeting Maddux as the new manager.

Then forget it. No way is Rangers are going to give him up for lateral move. Why would they?

The blurb you posted on page 3? The wording and placement of the quote made me think that Maddux and Bud Black were being rumored as managerial candidates.

No. I actually didn't hear the Gammons snippet, so I don't know the context of that... but I meant the SI clipping from last night that referred to a tidbit in the Tribune that Theo may look at Maddux as a pitching coach.

Ah, ok. I was thinking about the Gammons blurb when I responded to AI. Completely forgot about the other one.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I guess here would work.

KC Johnson must really be desperate for things to write about right now.

Ryne Sandberg will be the next manager of the Cubs.

We say this with NBA-lockout-induced certainty, er, creativity. And, really, the logic is as simple as 1, 23.

That's one, twenty-three in case the subtlety didn't take. But because Theo Epstein is such a numbers guy, we'll trust that he and Carmine followed.

Let's face it: This town always has been and always will be blessed by the number 23. The statue outside the United Center reminds us of that.

But beyond Michael Jordan, think about the current golden age of this number: Derrick Rose is 23 years old. So is Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Kane will catch up next month. Every time Devin Hester adds to his NFL-record kick-return touchdown total, defenders failing in their pursuit see No. 23 racing away.

I know it's tongue in cheek, but why the hell even bother writing some [expletive] like this? Does this actually fulfill some sort of requirement for him? Would the Tribune just let him write any nonsensical crap and consider that a job done?

when was Jon Farrell being speculated? saw this blurb on rotoworld:

For now, it sounds like he's prepared to stay with the Jays, but that won't stop recent speculation that teams such as the Red Sox and Cubs could attempt to pry him away.

I think there is a 20% chance that Mike returns as manager but I think we'll find out next week for sure. If not here is my top 10 of who i'd like to see. I had Farrell on the list but the Blue Jays have said they will block him from going anywhere.

1. Tito Francona

2. Eric Wedge

3. Dave Martinez

4. Bob Brenly

5. Torey Lovullo

6. Willie Randolph

7. Sandy Alomar Jr.

8. Mike Maddux

9. Ryne Sandberg

10. Mike Sarbaugh

No Valentine? I know he was hard on Castro (as was Quade at times) during that game he was broadcasting, but I don't see that as necessarily a negative.

I only want Francona if everyone promises to call him Terry.

I don't think anyone calls him Terry except maybe his soon to be ex wife. Pretty much everybody has called him Tito because of his resemblance to his dad since he was at UofA.

They wouldn't and he likely wouldn't either. I do think he'd make a great manager.
