To be honest, I hope that Quade is offered a position somewhere in the organization, be it his old 3B coach job, a bench coach, or a minor league coach. It would be a shame if a guy who had been in the organization as long as he has would finally be given the managers job and it didn't work out so he's kicked to the curb all together. He's a very good man but a very bad wizard.

I don't want Ryno but that has more to do with not wanting to hear fans and certain family members talk about "playing the game the right way" all the damn time.

I really don't care. If Theo, etc, hires them, I'm good.

I agree with you. He certainly could have his old job back after they fire "out at home" DeJesus.

On paper, Quade was a good candidate, a guy who had experience managing in the minors, had MLB experience, had been in different organizations (and namely, the A's at the turn of the century), was supposed to be a good teacher of fundamentals, and showed some level of awareness for stats, whereas Lou seemed blind at times on that. I was as big a proponent out there of Quade, but it just hasn't worked out. He had a bad team, but he also had some odd decisions. I wouldn't be against Theo using Quade in his first year, as Quade seems like the type of manager that Theo could control a bit better and that might be appealing to him.

That said, I'm not expecting Quade back. My first preference is still DeMarlo Hale. He seems as deserving of an opportunity as anyone, and Theo and Co. should know him fairly well.

Better than Waving Wendell.

What about Ken Macha? You would think he would be stats friendly after coaching under Beane. When he was just a bench coach with the A's Theo tried to hire him when he took over the Red Sox GM gig, but Beane denied the request for the interview. Or does he carry too much baggage with midwest sports fans and media after the Brewers fired him?

Guys who have coached under Scioscia always seem to turn out okay (ie Roenicke, Madden). Just grab someone from their staff. I've heard a lot of people think highly of Maddon's 3rd base coach in Tampa.

Just wondering, I might be just blanking, but who does NSBB regard as the best manager in the league?

Joe Maddon, if I had to pick one.

Honestly I mean sure, but I really just think managers only have to not be complete morons. As long as you aren't a Dusty or TLR batting pitchers 8th and bunting every inning then I can tolerate you. Why are most people (media) so afraid to admit how unimportant managers are? Or am I undervaluing them at this point?

I think they're unimportant as long as you have a strong front office that is setting strict guidelines on things like pitch counts. If you don't have that, and the manager has carte blanche to throw the staff ace 130 pitches every game because "that's the way Bob Gibson did it", then it's important.

bring on ryno.

sure he'll whine and complain a lot and probably make some boneheaded decisions. but it hasn't prevented la russa's success.

we win either way. either ryno doesn't do well and the cubs meatheads can move on from their fantasy. or ryno succeeds and we'll all love him equally as a manager as we did when he was a player.

Does anybody love their manager, winning or not?

If he does the things we expect him to, we will hate him, even if we're winning 95 games a year while doing it.

if we win a world series with ryno i'll personally erect a statue of him at wrigley field and will slap anyone who speaks ill of him

Don Zimmer says hello.

I can testify that the Ranger fans love Ron Washington, despite the fact that he makes some really dumbfounding in game decisions. Besides, he likes to party.

I would think that Theo would have interest in DaMarlo Hale if he's cut loose by the new Red Sox manager. He's also a Chicago native.

I'm on board. Why not? It's not like there's a first class manager out there. Maybe TF, but what's he going to cost 4-5 a year? I'd rather spend on players.

I don't think there's a person out there that doesn't pull for Washington. He's like a lovable teddy bear.

I've never heard that Braves fans didn't love Bobby Cox. Do Angel fans hate Scioscia?

I know of plenty that didn't. My uncle being one of them.

You can't paint by that broad a brush. I'm sure there are fans that love Scioscia and I'm sure there are plenty that hate him.

Most of us here are the types of fans that will probably not like Ryne Sandberg whether we win 100 games or not because we're smarter than that.

If he does dumb things and we win, we will have won in spite of him (which isn't that hard to do). If he does mostly smart things, it'll be a surprise based on his habits as a minor league manager and his comments in the past. And by smart things I don't mean "pulling the right strings" (another way of saying he did something -possibly smart or stupid- and then it worked out)...I mean actually doing smart things - whether they work out or not. Process oriented thinking > results based thinking. (not really directing any of that at you, dew... i'm pretty sure you know this ;) )

The only Angel fan I know hates Scioscia.

Ok, I had no idea. I don't think I've ever met an Angel fan.

I wasn't really trying to say that all Braves fans love Bobby Cox, but living near Atlanta my whole life I've known quite a few Braves fans over the years and they're either semi-neutral on Bobby or they absolutely love him. It was more a reference that if large parts of every fanbase hated their manager then I'd have heard of Braves fans (before your uncle) who hate Bobby Cox. I'm sure there are Braves fans who hate him, though.

I agree with all of this.

Not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here. It's a commenter from AceCubbie's blog. Maybe someone else saw it and can comment further.

Peter Gammons just said Cubs would be interested in Interveiwing Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, and said that Theo is a big Bud Black fan(Padres manager) and said he wanted him in 2003 before hiring Francona in Boston.
