I'm all for the Mike Maddux idea, just out of the hope of finally proving that there is no Mike Maddux and it's just Greg with a really shitty mustache.

I've heard some pretty good things about Dave Martinez, but I have no idea how he'd actually be.

That would be my choice...

Very interesting. I haven't heard much about him. That piece is already over three years old. Surprising he hasn't gotten a crack yet after all this time.

It should be noted, he managed at Pawtucket (Red Sox AAA) last year.

Everything I've heard about him, is that he's an outstanding in-game manager and a great communicator with the guys. He's knows statistics well but like Maddon will account for those but goes with instinct more.

If we're going to go with a guy who hasn't been a Major League manager before, we're going to go with Ryne Sandberg unless he refuses to come back.

Because you know what our new front office would do.

He's the real Epstein, duh. Go ahead, ask him about Pujols.

Two good names there.

Mike Maddux would be really cool, but it'd be taking him out of his element. He's the best pitching coach in baseball IMO. That doesn't make you a manager candidate.

09:05 AM ET 10.23 | While it remains unclear whether Greg Maddux will re-enlist as a special adviser with the new Cubs' regime, don't be surprised if Team Theo makes a run at hiring the Rangers' Mike Maddux as pitching coach. The Rangers' staff ERA has dropped in each of Maddux's three seasons.

Anyone know where this was in the Trib?

I don't want Ryno but that has more to do with not wanting to hear fans and certain family members talk about "playing the game the right way" all the damn time.

I really don't care. If Theo, etc, hires them, I'm good.

I've said before, I have no problem with the manager preaching play the game the right way, as long as you have a front office that is looking for talent rather than grit. Its not a bad arrangement. reverse it and you have problems.

Not if it's someone who's been a Major League coach before. Sandberg doesn't yet have that on his resume, and it's a plausible distinction.

I don't think there's any way Sandberg can come back as a coach. If the Cubs are going to bring him into the fold it's going to have to be as manager. Making him a coach or even a minor league manager is going to be putting undue pressure on whoever is hired as manager because the local media and meatball fans are going to be screaming for Sandberg every time the Cubs hit a rough patch.

He also "worked" under Cindy Sandberg, possibly driving the final nail in the Ryno/Cubs relationship coffin. As dumb as it sounds, it could preclude Ricketts (and his apparently Ryno love) from hiring him.

So would having another manager (Martinez) hired.

Sandberg flew into Chicago today. It may mean nothing, but still...
