They pulled a Ryne Sandberg!

Maybe if Robin Ventura had any sort of managerial experience at all. How do you think Ryno thinks that when he wanted to manage the Cubs asked him to go to A ball and work his way up through the minors managing, which he did without complaint, and then when the Cubs job opened he was passed over, and then he sees the White Sox hire a guy with no managerial experience at all?

I was anti-Ryno, and still am, but I can imagine it angers him to see that.

Why would it anger Ryno that a completely different franchise does something his franchise wasn't willing to do?

BUT BILLY'S MOM LET HIM DO IT!

I find the move to be interesting, he's supposed to be a very smart baseball guy and a good teammate. They need to go after Riggleman as their bench coach, although he's my darkhorse pick for Boston's managerial spot.

That would go against the "make your next manager the opposite of your current manager" theory.

I can't see Boston hiring the next Showalter just he's an ass. They don't subscribe to that flawed logic like the Cubs have in the past.

from a good fiend of mine, a White Sox fan in response to me asking him what he thought of the Ventura hiring:

nepotism run amok. i'm just sick. headed for a looooong night at the bar. kenny williams' ego has finally consumed what's left of his reason. he's next on my hit list...

lol.

I think the owner's prints are on this hire. And it's a P.R. move first and a baseball move second. Reinsdorf basically said so in the first line of his statement: "Robin is one of the most popular and highly regarded players in this franchise's history."

Ventura has zero coaching experience and has only been back in MLB in a limited capacity) since June of this past summer. This hire is akin to splittings 10s in blackjack. It may end up working out, but it's the wrong move no matter how you slice it.

And now the White Sox are interviewing Mark Parent for bench coach? Are you kidding me? If they want to go the Ventura route and pair him with an experienced bench coach, I could understand that, but putting a manager with no experience together with a guy who has never managed above AA... This just reeks of stupidity, arrogance, or both.

Should've gone with Brook Fordyce

Parent and Joe McEwing were hired to the staff, and Ventura is considering Jeff Manto for his bench coach. This is just getting silly.

hahaha Joe McEwing.

joe mcewing is probably the nicest ballplayer i've ever met...an ex g/f of mine loved him and we were able to meet and talk with him on several occasions...he was always great to talk to and got to the point where he recognized us when his team came to town...so [expletive] you, i like joe mcewing!

Supposedly Kenny Williams kicked around the thought of making Konerko a player/manager.

WTF, Kenny Williams? But really, WTF Jerry Reinsdoorf for not replacing him when he's had multiple chances, at Williams' suggestion?

Anyone think Ventura will pull a Dan Marino and resign before the season even starts? This guy has to realize he's in way over his head

I'm not sure which Kenny Williams quote is funnier, that Ventura was at the top of his search list from the get-go, or that he wanted to get him quickly before some other team did.

... The second one. The thought of him bargaining against a high school for his big league manager is priceless.

At least he's bringing on a smart coaching staff.

Just kidding. Here's a nice little gem about their new hitting coach.

For starters, Manto is no fan of on-base percentage, partly because he believes its emphasis on walks does not take into account that a base-on-balls is not always a desired or productive result.

While dismissing runs created, Manto offered his own statistical category: "runs produced" -- measured by adding runs and RBI, subtracting home runs from that total and dividing that number by games played.

Because any good offensive statistic should assign negative value to the single most valuable offensive play in the game.

Here's the rest of the article for more grinding goodness...

In fairness to Manto, he's subtracting HR to avoid double counting. That having been said, yeah, its pretty dumb.
