It's not so much that the booze isn't as fun, it's that whole having responsibilities to deal with the next day and the fact that the recovery takes longer. There's very little chance I could go out and get tanked 2 mights in a row these days and that was the norm (if not 3 or 4) 10-12 years ago.

I was at the one game playoff, it was a lot of fun, I remember everyone staying in their seats and dancing around after they won. I also remember Beck having absolutely nothing left and still getting the save.

I was also at the home games in 1989, those weren't very much fun.

I was in school at the time.

We left the apartment to celebrate a buddy's 21st birthday, and at that point I felt the game was in the bag. We got to the bar just in time to see the replays on ESPN. I almost threw up on the spot.

The hidden tragedy of that play: The Neifi era does not exist if he doesn't hit that home run for the Rockies that afternoon.

The Neifi homer was against the Giants on the final day of the season.

The day Neifi really did save the Cubs.

It was like 30 seconds after the Cubs game ended that day, correct?

I saw it live. Couldn't believe the drop. Then heard Santos' call, and couldn't stop laughing.

We made the playoffs that year so ultimately it didn't matter much. That weird first base line play against the Stros was probably more instrumental to our playoff appearance. But it was fun seeing Santos simply lose all control.

Pretty much. I remember feeling down after the Cubs lost that day, but it wasn't very long before excitement set in.

The Neifi HR was indeed on the last day of the season. We botched a game at Houston (when Terry Mulholland overthrew Grace on a simple 1-3 put out play), but were bailed out by Neifi's HR in Colorado

I remember the Mulholland error, but it wasn't game 162. Actually, I can't find it being anywhere down the stretch, which is strange.

The Mulholland play was not on the final day of the season. That game was in August of that year. Mulholland did start the final game of the year and gave up the 2 runs to tie the game but it wasn't on an error. Beck gave up the winning run in the 11th in his 3rd inning of work.

August 15th was that game.

I agree that 1998 was a more fun season to watch than 2003 and 2008. The playoffs in 2003 were obviously much more fun, but 1998 felt pretty magical. It just had that "special" feeling like something good was going to finally happen to the Cubs. In 2003, I knew the team was loaded with talent. I think I was more stressed that season because the team was good, and I expected something bad to happen. But I also felt that 2003 was just the beginning and if the Cubs didn't do it in 2003, they'd have plenty of chances with the great young pitching and the potential of the nucleus on offense with Patterson, Choi, Aramis, Bellhorn, and Sammy still having a little left in the tank,.

The extra innings walk-off homerun on the final weekend of the season in 2004 to that Met's player that I still haven't heard of since strikes me as more tragic than the Brant Brown play. Still gotta love the "Ohhhh nooo", though.

It was well afterwards that I finally heard Santos' call of it.

Honestly I don't remember expectations for that 2003 team being all that high beyond the fact that they had Prior & Wood...when they even made the playoffs, I was pleasantly surprised. That is why I guess the meltdown against Florida never bothered me that much...I'll always be far more depressed by the 2008 team melting down against LA.

I thought they were considered one of the up and coming teams. I remember ESPN saying things like "they could compete this year but they are probably a year or two away". At least that is what I remember, I could be way off.

i don't know, i had a pretty magical feeling about the cubs during the 2008 regular season. first time we were legitimately the best team in the league.

I remember the same thing. They were supposed to be decent in 03 but not really good until 04-05.
