The Cubs' bid was "very low" and they have no illusions of winning the rights to negotiate with Darvish, a source tells Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Dumb report. Why would they bother bidding if they didn't think they might win? Did Theo think that maybe he could bid $5 million and all of the other teams might forget to submit anything?

I think Cafardo is the guy who said the other day that the Cubs aren't players for Fielder either. Sounds more like he has an agenda.

He's got a source with an agenda.

Or maybe Theos corresponding with the Boston media while the local guys are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I don't think that anybody knows what's going on behind the scenes with Theo and Hoyer. It could be a full rebuild, but if so it will be one involving top prospects and young players do I'm OK with it. I doubt that Ricketts jumped through all the hoops he did to put this front office together to get David DeJesus and Ian Stewart. I expect the offseason to be a busy one. The question is in which direction.

Well, yes. The source could be Theo and the agenda could be "the truth" for all we know.

I don't know about you guys but the first place I look for Cubs breaking news is the Boston media.

I could well be wrong, but wasn't Cafardo big on reporting crazy stuff about Theo's compensation? As in, the Red Sox were in the ideal position and the Cubs were giving up significant pieces for Theo? I tend to think Cafardo doesn't have strong sources in Chicago.

Carfado was the reporter congratulating himself for pushing for Starlin as comp for Theo.

It's the art of the deal!

Yeah...maybe he's right but every tweet ive seen him have about the Cubs has been negative towards the Cubs. I get that he might have theo connections.....or had them, but come on.

Why even make a bid if you know it has no shot of winning?

...Why even make a bid if you know it has no shot of winning?

This is my argument as well. Plus, it's a blind bid so there's no reason to go through the motions if you aren't in it to really win the player.

If the Cards or Brewers were a big threat I would understand. Really no one in the NL outside of the Cubs was really gunning for him.

Thanks. I was thinking I remembered him saying something silly about the compensation issue.

Two interesting, though possibly meaningless for all we know, comments on the Darvish bidding:

# The Yankees are "not getting [Darvish]" according to Marc Carig of The Star Ledger, citing a person close to the situation. The winning bid was a "ridiculous number," added Carig's source.

# Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that he'd be "shocked" if a team besides the Rangers or Blue Jays submitted the highest bid for Darvish.

ESPN's Buster Olney heard from a source Monday who suggested the Rangers might have won exclusive negotiating rights to Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish.

Many have suspected that the Blue Jays made the highest bid, and the New York Post even crowned Toronto as the winner last week. But Olney spoke to an American League executive Monday who said the "smart money is on the Rangers." Darvish, 25, posted a sparkling 1.44 ERA and 276/36 K/BB ratio in 232 innings this past season in Japan. The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters are expected to make an announcement on his probable landing spot Monday night.

Few days ago it was Toronto, now it's Texas as the favorites. So nobody knows who has won.

I'm betting on "Not the Cubs."

I agree.

Yep, not the Cubs. At first I thought it was just media games, but there is starting to be a pretty consistent "The Cubs aren't going to spend money right now" vibe coming from camp Theo.

Whoever has the better system is who I am rooting for to not get Darvish, so we can flip them Garza.

Not to be all negative, but I have to agree with those that think it'll be Toronto or Texas. I think we would have heard something by now with the cubs if they really had put in a bid that high. Hope I'm wrong though.

I think the Cubs name isn't out there because the people speculating are the same people who inexplicably think the Cubs don't have money and because the Cubs haven't said anything about their bid.

They didn't just bid for fun. We've already heard that the Cubs put a very large bid in (if we're to trust Brett's source).

The fact that there's still speculation about what team it is shows how premature the "reports" were that the Jays had won it last week.

In other words, the speculation means little to nothing. The Cubs might have won, they might not have...and because they're just one of several teams, they probably didn't. But a bunch of Tweets that essentially amount to guessing who won the bid based on who is talking when the Cubs aren't really talking mean just about nothing to me.

For the most part, I think the people who are guessing are idiots to begin with...so why would I start to listen to them now?
