ESPN's Buster Olney heard from a source Monday who suggested the Rangers might have won exclusive negotiating rights to Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish.

Many have suspected that the Blue Jays made the highest bid, and the New York Post even crowned Toronto as the winner last week. But Olney spoke to an American League executive Monday who said the "smart money is on the Rangers." Darvish, 25, posted a sparkling 1.44 ERA and 276/36 K/BB ratio in 232 innings this past season in Japan. The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters are expected to make an announcement on his probable landing spot Monday night.

Few days ago it was Toronto, now it's Texas as the favorites. So nobody knows who has won.

I'm betting on "Not the Cubs."

Why because no idiot reporter has guessed the Cubs yet? Or because Nick whatever his name is has a pulse on the Cubs?

If anything, the fact that randomly that the Blue Jays were almost unanimously anointed winners for several days and now all the sudden the 'smart money' is on another team should give even more evidence that these bozos don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Despite the teasers of nobody knowing who the winner is, I think it's an is what it is situation and it's Rangers or Blue Jays.

what "is what it is" even mean?

I had such a hard time reading that.

Because absolutely, positively nothing indicates that it *is* the Cubs except a vague BN report that we "wouldn't be surprised" if we won.

And because taking the field against the Cubs is an odds bet.

But why would there be? At this point, probably a handful of Cubs employees, A couple of people at MLB, and maybe not even the Japanese team yet know what the Cubs bid was. Perhaps nobody is talking the Cubs, because the Cubs aren't talking to them.

Personally I don't think the Cubs won, but that isn't because no random reporters are talking about them.

Well, we got Ian Stewart, and there were serious rumors.

We got David DeJesus, and there were serious rumors.

The lack of serious rumors doesn't preclude it, but it means "Not the Cubs" is the odds-on bet.

I believe it's somebody other than the Cubs because the odds are it is somebody other than the Cubs, not because it hasn't been leaked yet.

Also this.

Actually, the odds-on bet is "Not The" followed by every team who has bid. Given equal odds, it is always best to take the field.

Not to be all negative, but I have to agree with those that think it'll be Toronto or Texas. I think we would have heard something by now with the cubs if they really had put in a bid that high. Hope I'm wrong though.

If none of Theo, Jed, Ricketts, etc are leaking anything, and if nobody from the Commissioner's office is leaking anything, then we don't know squat about where the Cubs stand.

And both of those "ifs" have a strong likelihood of being true, IMO.

The odds aren't equal.

If you ignore the nonsensical speculation, the Cubs should be one of the teams weighed more heavily.

There's been more info about Darvish to the Cubs than there was DeJesus. Stewart, on the other hand, had info coming from Denver early and often. And even then, he was traded for like 2 days during the Winter Meetings and no one knew.

In this case, there's only one source of information, the Cubs themselves. Considering how well they've kept a lid on more involved decisions, it'd be no surprise if no one had any idea what they decided to submit on Darvish. Personally, I think they submitted a strong offer, because I think there's signs that point in that direction(wanting younger/prime aged players, wanting pitching depth but only talking to Maholm so far while shopping Garza, repeated interest in Fielder but no advancement in the talks, reported interest in lower cost 1B options like Rizzo, the FO's history with the posting process, etc). Maybe that's wrong, but it won't be because of what any news outlet reported about the bids knew about the Cubs, which is the larger point.

There were. Just a few quiet mentions, mainly because it's David DeJesus, but there were.

There were plenty. Kaplan and one of the main guys like Rogers were taking about it for a week or so before we signed him.

FWIW, I remembered a little more chatter too...but all I can find is that Dierkes predicted DeJesus to the Cubs in MLBTR's free agent predictions.

There is no other mention of DeJesus on these boards prior to the actual signing.

Heyman

This is all still speculation, but fwiw folks whove spoken to #bluejays people say they don't seem confident they won darvish bid.

2 days before we signed DeJesus I believe. I remember Rogers or Sullivan mention him too though.

Rogers doesn't think the Cubs will get Darvish because it would block Casey Coleman.

WTH? I hope he didn't really say that.

I guess he would somewhat block Casey Coleman, but not nearly as much as the fact that Casey Coleman's bad is blocking Casey Coleman.
