I don't know if the Cubs ultimately will end up signing Epstein as GM but based on how this week has unfolded, I can safely say they are going to not going to hire one of the old retreads that had been thrown out earlier in the discussions such as Ned Colletti. Ricketts' apparent approach to Epstein has me believing he'll pursue a younger, SABR-inclined candidate.

So tomorrow could potentially have the Cubs announcing of Esptein and the end of the Brewers and Cardinals seasons? And Christmas used to come in December.

Man, why'd you have to go and make this post?

Apparently being Jewish also is a factor on something being announced

I'd say Theo as GM is much more likely and something we should know in the next 2-3 days. The Jewish high holiday starting tomorrow night convilutes things a bit. It would not be kosher to announce your new Jewish GM on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Expect something either today or up to sundown Friday. After that it would be Sunday.

Because I believe in jinxes as much as I do The Billy Goats curse.

I cant believe a 7 am news conference in Boston will be the first time we hear anything.

Agreed and it is not even a news conference, it is a radio interview.

Well, this might or might not mean jack. I just talked with a business associate who is in Boston right now. He heard that the Red Sox have 100% confidence that Cherington could do the job and would not blink an eye to promote him should Theo come here.

My guess is the relationship between Theo and Henry/Lucchino is strained and they proabably feel Cherington should get the job and pick HIS manager. Theo wanted Francona to stay, upper management did not.

The ball is in Theo's court and I do not think brass will stand in his way if he wants to come to the Cubs.

Trying to remember the last time there was this much drama around a possible Cubs move. Nomar? The time we thought about trading Sosa at the deadline?

Uhh...Brian Roberts, as has already been mentioned like 10 times in this thread?

Just doesn't feel the same to me. That stuff was normal offseason "hey, there's a good player, we might get him." We're treading on some unprecedented ground here, in a cool way.

It's 8 am ET, which is drivetime sports radio.

Based on nothing but my guess, I fully expect them to say Theo will be interviewing with the Cubs. They hope he chooses to stay in the organization, but if he doesn't they are fully confident in the people they have in the front office to get the job done.

They won't duck the question. They are doing an hour long interview on a radio station they have a partnership with. They are either going to say they granted him permission, or they didn't. I don't think there is anyway they annouce he is leaving the organization tomorrow morning. I bet they spend about 5 minutes talking Theo and more time talking about the manager situation, the drinking in the clubhouse, the big money underachieving players, plans for 2012 free agency, etc.

Just curious, but what was the question he was answering? In other words, curious as to "much more likely" than what..

He was replying to a fan question of what's more likely, Epstein as GM or Ryno as manager.

Doesn't Epstein have a contract option due on Oct. 8th (Saturday)? Seems that would be much more of a pressing factor on getting this done quickly than Yom Kippur.

Where did you hear it was the 8th? I hadn't heard that, but it's kind of interesting if true.

It's a little academic, though, as they could just pick it up, and continue "trade" discussions if they wanted Epstein to leave/Epstein wanted to leave.
