I really don't know a lot about the structure, but wouldn't it be something like this?

Fleita: Hey! Let's promote this super whiz kid awesome player! He's amazing and will change the face of baseball! Just read some of the scouting reports I wrote on him!

FreidmanEpsteinByrnesCashmanUnknown: No.

Fleita: But,

FreidmanEpsteinByrnesCashmanUnknown: No.

Aaaaaaaaaand Scene!!

You forgot to add a tear falling on Fleita's stone computer, which then short circuits.

No link to provide, unfortunately, but Newsradio 780, WBBM-AM in Chicago is reporting that Andrew Friedman DOES HAVE INTEREST in the Cubs GM job.

Has this been picked up anywhere else? I haven't read about it.

He was the GM in charge back in the day when anytime someone was interested in a Devil Rays player they would ask for a ridiculous return for them, right? I know that had something to do with the influence of the owner but still.

i'm sure i've heard worse ideas, though i can't think of any off the top of my head. that kevin stocker for bobby abreu swap sure was a masterstroke on lamar's part.

Besides losing, that trade was once what the Rays franchise was best known for.

Could do a lot worse but honestly, Theo, Freidman, Cashman, Cherrington, Hahn better all have said no before the Cubs look this direction. However if Ricketts is taking consultation from Gillick this may make sense.

I beg to differ. I don't see how he's better than Hendry.

Could it be that LaMar had been asked to interview for the Chicago Cubs’ GM position (“the feeling” that LaMar was leaving “to have opportunities”), and the Phillies’ brass wasn’t too keen on letting him step out for a look-see in the middle of a pennant race?

Why the hell would the Phillies be so upset about an assistant whose main job is player development asking to interview for a GM position when the minor league season is over just because the team is in a pennant race. Would they really think his interview would somehow distract the Phillies from winning a game? Is Halladay going to lose focus wondering whether the freaking assistant GM is going to interview with another team?

For the record, I think this hire would suck balls.

Colin Wyers - Already hearing LaMar to Cubs speculation. Probably baseless, but I've heard worse ideas. (retweeted by Bruce)

That's kind of scary. He resigned suddenly, and won't reveal publicly why. Why would you do that if you didn't have something else lined up.

Hopefully he got caught banging Sandberg's wife or something.

That's my read.

At first glance it seems crazy that LaMar could even be considered...but the timing of him resigning, the connection to Gillick, who probably hired him with Philly and would certainly recommend him to Ricketts, the Wilken connection to both Gillick and LaMar, and last but not least....the Sandberg connection.

This...really...could...play...out.

I didn't know that assistant GMs sat around doing nothing in September. Must be a nice gig.

For the record, I would also be disappointed by LaMar, and don't think he's a likely candidate. The timing, abruptness, and connections make it a worthwhile discussion, though.

What could he possibly be responsible for on a day to day basis where interviewing for another job would somehow get in the way?

I remember catching that on MLBTR about him resigning, and wondering if their was a connection, especially considering that their wouldn't be any hints out there for who was being considered until someone is actually hired.

top notch work as always

the sky is falling!

look, most of the candidates that ricketts would want to talk to are probably off limits right now. epstein's team is going to the playoffs, friedman is still under contract as his team's GM, and several other assistant GMs are still working on the 2011 season. the cubs are a bad team, the trade deadline is past and realistically there won't be a waiver deal at this stage. so there's no urgency whatsoever to replace randy bush in the next month. why the crap would they just go out and hire chuck lamar as their GM in early september?

not to mention the part where you don't fire jim hendry, who wasn't good but also wasn't a disaster, to bring in a guy who had a .400 winning percentage during his tenure as GM. it makes way more sense to hire an up-and-coming guy that it does to hire a guy like chuck lamar. ricketts wants to make a splash, not hire some crappy retread.

Posted

It's fun to speculate about who's coming on board, but let's not forget what we've actually learned about Ricketts. The media doesn't have any idea what he's doing. Hendry was fired for a month before he had a press conference, and in that week there was more than one "hearing that Jim Hendry will stay on" articles. He also does what he says. Invest more in the minor leagues and draft? Done. Invest in infrastructure, both at the MLB and MiLB level? Done one, working on Wrigley. Wanted to keep Fleita and Wilken? Looks to be done. So when he says he wants to hire a GM with a more analytical bent, I'm inclined to believe him. And I'm not inclined to believe anyone in the media claiming to have an idea of who has the inside track, especially guys like Colletti and LaMar who are counter to what Ricketts said that he wanted in the position.

Besides, think through this LaMar business. What makes more sense, LaMar resigns so he can interview and take the Cubs GM job before any other potential candidates would be available to interview, or that there's literally any other reason for LaMar to resign? I'm not going to say it's impossible that LaMar gets hired, but I'm not going to put any stock in reporters trying to read tea leaves that lead them to conclusions that have LaMar as a runaway candidate that gets the job before truly considering anyone else.

I doubt it would be about interfering with the day to day ops (though, come on - he's doing something). It would be about a lack of commitment to the organization.

This is all very much hypothetical, by the way. It's a plausible explanation, not a likely one.

Again, what could he possibly be doing where going on an interview would distract from what the team has to do the rest of the year?

Professional sports is a business where guys are allowed opportunities to move up in other organizations without much fuss unless there is some sort of big investment in that guy.
