As great as Tulo is, he's a good reminder.

Tulo on his 22nd birthday: -0.5 WAR in MLB

Castro on his 22nd birthday: 4.7 WAR in MLB (and counting)

Be honest. Who here is shocked as hell that this kid came from the Cubs minor league system?

i'm not, just because he's the type of player who can succeed in the cubs' "hack at everything" system because he has such great contact skills. i'd be shocked if a guy with we developed a hitter like nick swisher or whoever...

He deserves to be on a team that doesn't suck. Now now I'm not saying trade him to do him a favor. I'd actually like it if you know, the Cubs could actually build a god damn good team worthy of having Castro on it, and not wasting away on patching mediocre after mediocre crap with more mediocre and crappy crap.

to further this point, i was looking at both these guys' FB/HR rates, and if Castro can close the gap even partially, i'd imagine he'd be seen as the top shortstop in baseball.

Or Brett Jackson?

i'm not sure the cubs can claim a lot of credit for developing him since he's pretty much exactly the hitter that he was in college - except for maybe his power has come on more than people thought.

soto is more a guy who developed in the cub system, since he was drafted out of high school and is a patient hitter.

Well by that standard, they didn't develop Castro either. Jackson already has more PAs than Castro did in the minors.

That's hardly the same standard, considering they absolutely did develop Castro from a young age, while Jackson played major college baseball into his 20's.

The Cubs have to get credit for developing Jackson, as he was far from a can't miss stud college bat when they acquired him. Although he's got a long way to go before you can say he's done what Castro has done.

Just curious what other people might think about this.

Starlin is aware of how many hits he needs for 200 and has stated it's his goal to get there this month. Do you see his average and on-base dipping big-time over the final couple weeks of the season due to this? I'd imagine he's not going to want to give up any at-bats by taking walks and might expand the strike zone further.

Not sure it totally matters, but I'd hate to see his on-base dip to the low 320s by the end of the season. Perhaps I'm way off on this.

Starlin's walked 5 times in his last 9 games. Nothing spectacular, but considering he only had 21 in his first 127 games of the season, I don't think we need to worry about him being more aggressive.

first half: .307/.335/.428 (.763)

sec half: .302/.333/.429 (.763)

first half: 24 2B, 8 3B, 2 HR

sec half: 6 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR (in 54% of the PA)

since ASB, he's been hitting a lot less 2B & 3B and (comparatively) much more HR, keeping his ISO perfectly constant

what's worrisome, is he's striking out 175% as often in the second half for whatever reason; is he lengthening his swing too much?

Just imagine if Crane Kenney hadn't demanded that Quade hit Castro 3rd for much of the year.

The root of the problem is that Fleita and Wilken said that their stone and chisels figured that's where he hits best. Ricketts extended the idea.

Ramirez has also been public enemy #1 or 2 of the hack sportswriters in Chicago. It wouldn't shock me if he had no love for the buffoons in the press and has steered Castro the same way.

this.

He was too busy tying young maidens to train tracks.

I really want Kenney to grow a handlebar mustache now.

It would look great with his top hat and cape.

I actually found a recent photo of him when he learned of Ricketts plans to hire a new GM.

Rumor has it, that Kenney has been pushing Ricketts to hire this guy as the new GM
