"I think our veterans are doing a pretty damn good job," Quade said. "I see intensity from our center fielder (Marlon Byrd), and Rami's (Aramis Ramirez) playing really well. It doesn't mean we don't make some mistakes. I just know the value of the middle of the diamond. We've got two talented kids there that need to get better, and they've got 60-some games to prove that and to show that the rest of this season and go from there."

What the what? Not only did he single out Castro and Barney and blame them for a blowout loss, he specifically defended the veterans.

I'm off the bandwagon. I was fine with the no-name manager and didn't (and still don't) want Ryno. But [expletive] off Quade.

i liked the quade that put dave kaplan in his place during the cubs convention, not the one that has been mismanaging the cubs throughout the 2011 season.

I never thought Sandberg was the right guy for the job, but there's no way he would call out players like this in the media. Heck, I don't think you call any player out -- young or old. Those are club house / manager's office conversations and have no place in the media.

.

I'm not sure, maybe it was the hall of fame speech and all of the ejections but Sandberg seems to be a lot more vocal these days. I wouldn't put it past him calling out guys for not playing the game the right way. But then again he may not have to. When a Hall of Famer says something do players tend to listen more than if a career minor league manager with zero major league experience does? Does a HOFer immediately command more respect than someone like Quade who took the grunt path to the majors? Of course that really didnt work out that well for Ted Williams' stint with the Senators. Either way sandberg wasnt making this team better this year.

His comments today--much like his post facto tirade during the Marlins series--are bush league. If you think an ump botched a call, climb the dugout steps and let him know. If a player makes a miscue on the field, discuss it with him within the clubhouse.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Quade is in over his head. He needs to be let go.

or else what? Sorry Odo, but you're head is on the chopping block, not theirs.

There's no point in calling out the veterans that aren't going to be with the club in the future. He's letting his better players know that this level of play is not how teams win ball games. This is Quade trying to show the city of Chicago that he is still attempting to manage this team.

It's only July, but I already want them to pull the plug on this season.

I don't think what he said is that out of line. They're young players and learning. Certainly nobody here thinks Castro should just be left alone do they?

I'm also not of the mind that Quade has cost the team many games. There are far bigger problems with this team than Quade. They need to blow it up and start fresh.

Castro's wasn't a mental error. It wasn't an error due to a lack of focus and not keeping his mind in the game. He lost the ball in the sun. It's really the ultimate 'oh well' kind of error. To call him out is not fair to Castro and makes Quade and the Cubs organization look small time.

Not only calling him out on a missplay (one that every player has committed at one time or another) but the issuing some vague threat about having 60 days to prove he deserves a job. This is how people like Neifi Perez get jobs over more deserving young players.

Luckily, Quade wont be around to make that decision. Hopefully.

This season has morphed directly into watching the minors closely and pulling for some serious overslots with the draft picks. Literally, the ONLY thing worth paying attention to on the major league level IS Castro.

And if Quade wants to pile on him(and Barney, for that matter) get him out now. It's bad enough that these young guys are stuck with this dead ass team anyway with a bunch of guys who are just playing out the string. Quade is managing for his life right now, while he should be instructing these guys much more constructively than he is. No one truly thought of us as a contender this year, so I would have been happy just to see THAT side of Quade. But, he can't even do that, so get rid of his ass pronto.

That and the trade deadline.

It's morphed into this dazed-out, wake me up when its over kind of season.

I'm not really sure this season actually exists. I might wake up from it.

One thing's for sure. 10 years from now the only thing I'll remember is Castro, and I'll probably mistakenly attribute what he's doing in 2011 to some other year. This year's going in the circular file as soon as I'm mentally able. And Quade's going right along with it.

Let's just fast forward to the offseason, please.

I'd say there are at least a handful of other guys worth paying attention to and who are not just "playing out the string."

Ramirez, Soto, Dempster, Zambrano, Garza and Wells.

Those guys have been mostly good, except for Wells (who needs to bounce back to at least a level of competence). Soto struggled early but has been pretty good since May despite the occasional setback. Another group may be nothings special to watch or hope for, but Byrd and Pena hardly look "dead ass".

The team is no good, but let's not pretend it's about guys just not trying.

This isn't really the issue, however. It is perfectly acceptable to point out to Castro and Barney that they must communicate more effectively on infield fly balls. What galls people is the fact that Quade went on to publicly castigate those two players, placing a 9-1 loss (and more broadly the trajectory of the season) at their feet while absolving the vets.

While at the same time he has refused to blame any vets, went out of his way to defend and support vets and has repeatedly done this with Castro.

The Cubs offense scored 1 F'in run and this idiot focuses on a flyball that was lost in the sun? Then he compounds it by implying the veterans are playing good? How much more embarassment is Tom Ricketts willing to endure. This team is the laughingstock of baseball. Whether it makes a difference or not, you fire Quade today and let Listach manage the team the rest of the year. Or better yet, make Hendry manage them since he put this crap together.

I'm really surprised at Quade. He sounded like he knew what he was doing.

I think the Cubs should have brought in a more experienced major league pitching coach after Rothschild left. It's clear Quade cannot handle the rigors of dealing with the pitching aspect of the game.

He looks to be in way over his head. I started the preemptive Quade bandwagon. It's now time to take it to the car crusher. He's got to go.
