Castro will be the starting SS for the NL right?

Tulo probably figures to start. However, Reyes was replaced by Sandoval, leaving Starlin as the only other shortstop on the NL roster, so it's all Starlin once Tulo gets pulled.

Watching Sandoval try and play shortstop would be kinda fun, though.

That's right, I thought Tulo was also hurt and missing the game. That makes sense he's starting then. I wonder if Starlin will get any time in the field, or if they will leave Tulo in the whole game and use Starlin as a PH for the pitcher or as a pinch runner?

If someone is officially named to a team but ends up not going for whatever reason, do the ASG incentives in their contracts still vest? I definitely agree with the aforementioned suggestions requiring participation if this game is still going to count.

Also, have there been any indications that either the fan voting or the WS HFA impact are going to go away? Because one of the two seriously need to go.

I can live with the fan voting, but you can't have fan voting AND player voting AND manager picks AND 1 player per team minimums.

The players vote from the pool of all player, and then their consensus gets voted by fans so you go to their 2nd pick, but then he gets hurt, and their 3rd pick was chosen by the manager, so you go to their 4th pick and Scott Rolen makes the all-star team because 8 moron players happened to vote for him.

The manager has to take 1 2003 Devil Ray, but all the position player slots have been filled, so he can't take a worthy Aubrey Huff, so you wind up with Lance Carter, all-star.

Then bring it up.

The amount of players that have been replaced is getting ridiculous. 3 Pirates? Rolen and yet got Ramirez (yes, I know number of votes BS or whatever)... if you're going to have this mess, you can't have the game mean anything. What an embarrassment for MLB.

The DH is used even in NL parks now, so pinch-hitting for the pitcher is probably out. I would think Starlin enters the game in the 5th or 6th inning one way or another and plays the rest of the game, but we'll see.

And as Bochy sets his lineup, Tulo is indeed playing short and batting 8th.

OK so you brought it up and people discussed it for a bit and then we moved on to another equally relevant topic :)

My DirecTV DVR chose today to go out (seems like a power outage may have fried the hard drive) and it will be up to three business days before I receive a replacement, so no Home Run Derby or All-Star Game on TV for me this year. At least I can listen to them on XM Radio.

My SWM died Sunday night, and the tech's not coming until today. Feel your pain.

at least he was balanced out by the pirates' mike williams, who was sporting a 6.44 era at the all star break

He was my original example, but on closer inspection, that just looked like Dusty being a moron and taking roughly the 10th best pitcher on the Pirates.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game: This Time, It Counts!***

***Except that many good players aren't here, those that are here were seemingly chosen at random by monkeys, every team has to have one representative, the best players are out of the game long before it's over, some of the pitchers pitched recently and aren't available it's also kind of just an exhibition, home field should really just be determined by "best record," and "I don't wanna" is a legitimate excuse for not playing. But other than that...This Time, It Counts!

Yeah that's what's silly about this. The best players aren't really deciding this. There are 84 "All Stars" this year and people that are around the 70-84 range are going to be the ones playing in the late innings, deciding who gets HFA. So when Hunter Pence of the 30-62 Astros gets a GW single off of Gio Gonzalez of the 39-53 Astros, the Phillies can breathe easy knowing that Game 1 of the World Series would be at Citizens Bank Park.

So an Astro gets the game winning hit off an Astro. Talk about beating yourself. :D

The funny thing is, that was only the Cubs reserves (and an injured Soriano). Fukudome and Soto (and Lou) were not in the picture.

I was wondering how the Astros have played 184 games already... :-k

While on the treadmill this morning I noticed that ESPN had a lead-in saying "Small-ball wins the ASG for the NL". Hmm, I thought a 3-run HR from Fielder won the ASG for the NL. How is a power hitter hitting a HR "small-ball"?

Because they won, silly.

did best record determine HFA in the world series prior to selig changing it?

It just alternated, right?

It alternated prior to 2003.
