The complaint I'm not certain about is when people talk about the number of posts per day. There are still hundreds of posts here every single day. There may not be that many new topics in the baseball forums, but there really isn't a whole lot to talk about there right now.

Yeah, the Other Sports and Social forums keep quite active.

Well that's just it. NSBB has its core members of the board who actively discuss any and all topics. It's more or less a general message board with a Chicago sports lean.

And thats why the membership is likely stagnant (besides the obvious 'cubs are boring to discuss right now'), as it is advertised as a Cubs board, but there are more active Cubs forums out there nowadays to appeal to people coming to talk Cubs, and since most new traffic to the site is from people looking to discuss the Cubs, the social forums are not a draw and/or not noticed by potential new members.

I don't know how North Side Baseball devolved into a place where people don't talk much baseball, but it is an interesting example of a web community changing over time. I agree that this is likely hampering the site's growth. Most fans are like me in that we seek catharsis in the wake of disasters, and revelry after great victories. More often than not, neither is to be found here anymore.

But how does that compare to when it was apparently more active?

Well it would be found here if the Cubs actually elicited an emotional response anymore. Even people who aren't on the "its cool to not care" bandwagon (such as myself), I can't see them getting too down about the repeated failures of this team.

If the Cubs fielded a team that actually generated some interest, we'd see a return to emotional highs and lows for the Cubs (for better and for worse), although likely at a depressed level from 3-4 years ago.

They tend to skew older.

Do you have perform an age survey I'm not aware of?

Which is the reason I can't understand Tim or Yellon's defense of upper management. It's against their best interests to maintain the status quo.

The funny thing is, a 16 year old CT pretty much kept the social forum alive the first couple years of the website

I suspect these folks would rather have a less-busy site where they express their opinions freely and honestly, than a more-busy site where they perpetuate a false persona in order to drive traffic.

I can't believe you found your way back to NSBB. It's good to hear from you again!

Kyle, in your extensive research, at what age to people stop following the NBA and NFL?

NBA = the same age they stop liking new hip hop on the radio

NFL = when alzheimer's sets in and they can't remember their HS playing days anymore

I botched that one. Younger would have made sense with my age theory. Older is the opposite.

What if you didn't play football in high school and are an NFL fan?

Everybody played football in high school. This is America.

My high school didn't have a football team.
