the quality of the posters here has gone down pretty hard in recent years. Maybe people just became grumpier as the quality of the team suffered I don't know. these days if you post anything that differs from the opinion of 2 or 3 people you get a page of response about how much of an idiot you are. most of the friendly knowledgeable fans have been run off by A-holes. it's no surprise that new folks have no disire to post here. The only good entertaining discussion that goes on around here anymore is in the minor league and draft forums and that's because there are still knowledgable intelligent posters providing some great info on prospects and links to articles and info that would otherwise be alot harder to track down. the hard truth is that there are few friendly people left here, which is sad it used to be quite different.

i'll agree that some people around here, at times, could use a portion of humble pie. i'm glad that i'm not a mod.

There are a few insufferable know-it-all dbags here, for sure. But on the flip side, there seems to be a steady influx of meathead, sports talk listening, RBI/AVG/W/GRIT/CLUTCH loving, you-can-keep-your analysis morons as well.

Diplomacy would be nice, but I can't fault people entirely for losing their patience with those sorts of people.

Having said that, I could make a list of NSBB stalwarts who could do with being banned/suspended from time to time.

I can't believe you found your way back to NSBB. It's good to hear from you again!

thanks buddy… see Vinestal, there are still some friendly posters here after all, keep the faith

as one who has to take a "break" from time to time, i say that it's not necessarily a bad thing. of course my "breaks" dont stem from being a know it all d'bag, but more from being a terrible(at times) drunk

There's no hope. This season is a wash. The entire organization needs to be gutted and rebuilt, and that's in the hands of the Ricketts family. The only things left to do are watch Castro and the other young kids develop, and pray we make a splash on the free agent market.

My 2 cents......

You have a very small group of people posting here now who are far from interesting or insightful comprising the bulk of the posts on this site. They seem to feel the need to comment on every thread/subject even though they have nothing of substance to contribute.

Nobody is going to sign up on this site to have conversations with them, simple as that.

There's a lot of good stuff being posted in this site, just not in this forum. The minor league and amateur baseball forums are still good reading.

And the dearth of good stuff in the Cubs Discussion and Transactions forums has more to do with a lot of us becoming bitter and disillusioned than anything else. If things start looking up for the team, the quality of postings will as well.

But yeah, the amount of actual analysis and discussion is probably at an all time low.

What are the good conversations being had elsewhere?

I feel like we've beaten most baseball subjects to death here.

That's a big part of it. A lot of people are snarky because they're sick of having the same arguments over and over. I personally don't care for debating with the baseball equivalent of the flat earth society, but some people take opportunity to brow beat them. This place always had a bit of an elitist vibe, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some people might disagree, but I've always thought of NSBB as a place for more progressive analysis and discussion. Now there's just a lot of bad juju and bitter people.

But I really feel like lack of interest is driving the lack of discussion. There's always something to be smartly debated, who wants to think about the Cubs any more than they have to right now? it's just depressing. And I have a hard time believing that other places are hopping with lively discussion.

I'd wager that if stuff starts moving and shaking in the upcoming offseason, things here will pick back up in a hurry.

I only know how to be blunt so...

There is still plenty to talk about Tim. But the fact is you cant have a discussion on this board anymore without the same 3 or 4 pseudo know-it-alls cluttering up every thread. Frankly it has become outright threadshitting in most instances. And none of the mods/longtime posters seem willing to stand up to them.

There are plenty of young players on this years team worth discussing, but you definately need an influx of new blood. It will never happen the way things are now.Nobody with a contrary opinion is ever going to post here because a few have been allowed to run amuck.

Hell, let Meph back. He was an idiot half the time, but at least he was interesting.

When the team is playing this bad it will bring the meathead out in even the most diplomatic and even keeled NSBB member.

can you give actual examples of these topics?

Yeah, and this sniping amongst each other is real constructive.

I like it....get all the issues out. The whole saga of NSBB in general fascinates me. I get the impression that a lot of people even prefer having this closed community of 25-50 long time posters discussing everything and anything.

I'd prefer 26-51 if you know what I mean.

Chuck Cubs and that guy in 06 who argued we could still win the WC into late August?

What is The Cubs record after 77 games Alex. What did I win?

I have been a member and followed this board since Prior and Wood were our next big thing. I've followed Bobby Hill, Choi, Brian Roberts, Shark...all that. I am a casual message board poster, but I come to this site for insight into the Cubs that I can't get on the rest of the net. I love this board. For the most part, there aren't the usual internet idiots on here that consume most of the web.

My two cents...

When the Cubs show some bit of hope, whether it be at the big leagues or at the minors, this board will be active. We are all a bit disillusioned right now. I have started posting more recently, half of those in the social threads. This is still one of the more intelligent sports message boards out there. I check NSBB every day, as I have for years. It will just be more fun when we have hope in our franchise. Hopefully, then we will be bitching about all the jackass new posters on the board. That would be a good thing

I do, however, wish there would be some good info on the main page.

In short, I'm not surprised by the situation. The nature of internet message boards themselves seems to dicate that nobody will stick around forever. The trick is always in keeping fresh blood coming in. And since the Cubs are awful, I can hardly blame people for not being interested enough to show up on the boards. Hopefully registrations will tick up when the Cubs get better. That said, there is a major problem with civility on this board. And it appears to my untrained eye that many mods have decided they would rather have rude members posting correct information than more civil members being stupid.

I apologize in advance for the example I'm about to use, but I feel it illustrates the situation fairly well.

davearm has been known to annoy the hell out of me. He is constantly posting ridiculous crap that I find patently absurd. It's apparent that most of the board feels the same way, from the reactions he garners. Each and every time he posts, the same people come in and just lambast him... and it's rarely civil. And yet I never see anybody get in trouble for being so rude to him. But without guys like davearm around, I probably wouldn't post at all. Because without an opposing side, there isn't an interesting debate to be had. How he's managed the desire to stick around despite being shouted down on each of his last thousand posts, I'll never know... but I respect the hell out of it.

If the quality of posts here is going to go back to where we all want it to, it all starts with keeping a civil tone so that actual conversations can be had. I wont single anybody out, as I have been guilty of it in the past too... but the snark is out of control.

We need to stop scaring people away.
