According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Andrew Cashner has landed a spot in the Cubs' rotation.

Cashner, 24, turned in a 2.05 ERA and 59/15 K/BB ratio across 57 innings between Double-A and Triple-A in 2010. He was shaky when called up to the big leagues, but the talent is there and he has the potential to make himself useful in deeper mixed leagues. His strikeout rates in the minor leagues have been decent. Carlos Silva is likely to be released to free up roster space.

Rosenthal, confirming the last part is a possibility:

However, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that trade interest in Silva did not pick up after his last outing (Twitter link). Rosenthal says the Cubs could release Silva if they don't want him in their bullpen.

From Sullivan to Rogers to Rosenthal to Levine and probably a few more guys as well, why are they all acting like the Cubs have to pick up all 11.5 mill on Silva. The Mariners are paying 5.5 mill of that. There is the 2 mill buyout afterwards to deal with as well, but the bottom line is the Cubs are NOT responsible for his entire salary and there's no way these guys shouldn't know that.

Hill IS confirmed to be the backup catcher, by the way. I hope we DL Ramirez at least, to keep him around. Not all that disappointed here, since I want Castillo to get fulltime AB's in AAA anyway.

Big day for Mateo, I hope he pitches well, making it even harder to keep Silva around. Of course, they could find a way to DL Silva too though, and use him as a 6th starter if Cashner(hopefully report is true) falters and pen is overworked early. That said, Coleman is the better option for this, as far as I'm concerned at least. I'm sure the Cubs are trying everything possible to save ANYTHING whatsoever here monetarily. If someone got Silva for free and just picked up the 2 mill buyout, it'd be better than a flat-out release.

Cashner was the more important decision to me than Castillo, so I'm happy. I don't think there's any doubt that Castillo's much, MUCH better than Hill, but as others have pointed out he's probably better off getting regular playing time for Iowa than gathering splinters on the Cubs' bench. If Soto goes down for any period of time and Hill gets the bulk of the playing time then I'll be angry.

I hope this is true and I also hope the Cubs show patience with him this season.

Koyie Hill has to have some dirt on Hendry or something. That or he is the best clubhouse presence ever and they're willing to pay him close to a million a year to suck ass at everything baseball related just because he's a chill dude.

This is the best part of all. Now release Koyie Hill and let's start the damn season.

Well, the BEST part of all would be getting something for the sack of crap, but I can live with a release.

releasing silva would help here. it'd be great if there wasn't the risk that silva pitched well in a couple long relief outings and boom, cashner gets yanked out of the rotation.

but i have faith that quade is going to show patience. he seems to make solid decisions and not give a [expletive] if morons like kapman don't agree with him.

That's the key, he's going to struggle with his command/control which will lead to high pitch counts and lower IPs as well as the BBs and 0-2 FBs that tail back over the plate. Obviously, its worth letting him develop as a starter to maximize his value/ceiling.

Even if Cashner crashes and burns, Coleman, Jackson, and Carpenter should all be ahead of Silva. Even if Silva could be an OK 5th starter, we have younger and better. It isn't too far down the road that Z and Demp leave town, and we shoulld be auditioning our guys for the future.
