2011 Bears Offseason thread

Do we have any idea at what kind of a spending budget the Bears have this offseason? I'm curious as to if they could even afford the salary someone like Jackson is going to demand.

Nobody even knows if the salary cap will be the same until there's a new CBA. So...no.

Where were we in regards to the old cap?

This was an uncapped year. There's really no way to answer your question...

Here's the team by team payroll as of September.

The 2009 cap number was 127 mill, by the way. So, take those numbers and put them in context of that. Usually, there is around a 7-10 mill bump on the cap each year and there was a minimum spending amount of 80% of the cap.

That being said, the players had always said that if they played in an uncapped year, they wouldn't ever go back to playing under one again.

Thanks sir, I was looking for that. Surprised how many teams are ahead of us.

Kreutz didn’t produce what anyone would call a banner year in 2010, but his value in blitz recognition and as a traffic controller on that offensive line can’t be diminished.

Yes, can't diminish the value of the leader of an offensive line that allowed its QBs to get sacked 56 times, mostly due to blitzes that weren't picked up.

Want Back: Roach, Manning, E Williams, Hanie, Adams

Don't want back: Tinoisamoa (good player, too many injuries), Clark, Collins, Kreutz, Davis, Maynard, Bullocks, Wilson

Probably want out: Graham (goes to a team that lets him play CB), Aromashodu (goes to a team the lets him play WR)

I bet Graham and Davis stay for ST.

So is Hanie our #2 now? I'd like a reliable second option. Hopefully they've learned their lesson with Collins.

Hanie is a unrestricted free agent so who knows. Some team who needs a QB may look to bring him in

We can be pretty sure that none will pull off the pornstache better than Caleb Hanie though.

I'd like the Bears to take a look at Drew Stanton. He looked good vs. the Bears when they played in Detroit. And he was drafted in Detroit when Martz was the OC there. He spent that year on IR, but I'm sure he picked up some of the offense.

Cutler, Stanton, Hanie sounds like a solid group of mobile QBs who you don't have to change the offense for.

didn't stanton criticize martz's offense in an interview this season?

Yeah, I forgot about that. Just found the article.

That article made it seem like Manning would be unlikely to return. They have to re-sign him.

I hope Graham and Pisa are back too.

I don't want Pisa back. He's only a 2-down LB at this point. Roach is younger, healthier, and has played MLB in his career. He's also better as a nickel LB. He's a great player, but he missed 16 games in 2 years as a Bear. I wouldn't spend anymore money on him.

And yes, the better bring back Manning. If not, they probably need to bring in 2 safeties this offseason, 1 of which has to be an early pick or a high priced FA to potentially start.

I have no problem with Roach starting but they'd need to get a competent #4 OLB then.

I wish they would have played Graham more when Jennings ended up becoming the starter.

Same here. Marinelli must know something we don't, though.

Agreed. There's a couple guys in the draft I really like, including mini-Urlacher, Colin McCarthy.

If I wanted to address EACH hole on this team somehow, these are the holes that could be upgraded. Keep in mind, I don't think for a minute each of these get addressed.

Left Tackle- Need a true stud here.

Offensive Guard- Need a young guy who's ready to go immediately. Not sure I can trust Garza to last another year.

OT/OG- Another guy who can move around and play in different spots when needed due to injury.

Backup QB- Maybe Hanie is fine, but since he's a FA, it's got to be addressed at least, whether it's him or not.

Wide Receiver- Big guy who can stretch the field is my true want, but I'll take anyone who actually qualifies as a go to receiver.

Backup RB- I'd like a bigger guy who's a shortyardage stud, but I think the Bears probably see Taylor as the answer for another year anyway.

Punter- Time for a change here. Not much to say.

DE- I'd like a situational pass rusher somehow. I'd love to find another Mark Anderson(in his rookie year) type steal to pair with Peppers on passing downs.

DT- I'm fine with Harris, if he gives us a discount. If not, address this again as well. Keep Adams as well.

LB- Need a replacement for Pisa. If it's Roach, we need another guy who can play all 3 spots in a pinch, as Roach has done.

CB- Personally, I think we need 2 guys here. But, I'd settle for one. Tillman's had a great year, but he's at the age where it can go very quickly.(not talking about replacing him, just insurance against an injury for now) I've never been a Jennings fan so someone to start instead of him would be nice.

SS- Resign Manning. Although I have my doubts this happens as he's likely to get paid very well somewhere. I'm not sold on Wright being the answer either.

FS- Could use an upgrade here as well. Harris is decent, but he's probably league average.

That's completely nitpicking this team from my standpoint. I don't think we'll address more than about half of these and I'd be OK with that, as long as it's some of the more important ones. In order, here's my nitpicked list.

1. Left Tackle

2. Wide Receiver

3. Offensive Guard

4. Defensive Tackle

5. Corner Back

6. Defensive End

7. Strong Safety

8. Outside Linebacker

9. Backup QB

10. OT/OG combo guy

11. Punter

12. Backup RB

13. Free Safety

I'm fine with Maynard. He has a lot of success pinning the opponent deep in their own territory even if he doesn't finish in the top half in punt yardage. Part of what keeps his numbers down, IMO, are the high number of pooch kicks he ends up having because Hester gave the team excellent field position and then we turn it over on downs right away.

Maynard doesn't muff snaps, or get punts blocked and he rarely has punts returned for touchdowns on him. I like the guy, personally. Sure, he occasionally shanks one, but they are all capable of that, especially with the field conditions they are constantly dealing with.
