"In this offense if you run a slant and a defender is coming down on you then you have to cross his face," he said Tuesday on "Chicago Tribune Live."

"But every time I see Johnny Knox run a slant he goes behind the defender and you see an interception go the other way and everyone looks at Jay Cutler and says, 'How did he throw that pass?' That is going to be a mistake no matter who the quarterback is."

On Cutler: "People in Chicago expect Jay to be Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. I think he is more like Ben Roethlisberger. Guys who win but sometimes that winning is going to look ugly."

Couldn't agree more on the Knox stuff. Knox has made had some flashes, but he's disappointed me a whole lot.

According to @ProFootbalFocus no receiver had more of their targets picked off last season than Johnny Knox http://bit.ly/dNFAWP half a minute ago via Seesmic Desktop

I understand being disappointed with specific plays. But I don't know how anyone can be disappointed with the season a 2nd year, 5th round draft pick, out of Abilene Christian who had 51 catches, for 960 yards, 5 TDs, and a league's 5th best 18.8 yards per reception.

Just like Hester before him, Knox is a victim of being thrust into the wrong situation as the #1 WR. Get a legit WR and watch him get better.

Yeah, that's my feeling on Knox as well. Much better than I would have thought, just put in a role he's clearly not ready for now. To me, a WR is the number 1 priority through FA.

He's probably never going to be a great route runner, or fight for underthrown passes, or bump his way through press coverage effectively.

I think he's doing what he's going to do, right now.

Probably true. But with another WR, you can minimize the need to thrust him into routes and situations he's not comfortable with. On 3rd and 3, you can't wait for Knox to get open down the field, because Cutler would get hit in the mouth before that ever developed. But if you get a WR that can go in and catch those slant passes on the outside, then that opens up Knox to be more like the other small, big play WRs in the game like DeSean Jackson and Mike Wallace, who don't really catch a lot of slants, outs, or curls, but have a lot of success.

Fair enough. I'm willing to say revise my statement and say that he's disappointed me a whole lot as a #1 WR. I'm not saying to throw him out the door or anything. But I would like to see him not be a #1 next year.

Yep, I agree with all that. The Bears should be able to minimize his shortcomings and maximize his strengths.

Given where he was drafted, Knox has to be considered a very successful pick.

Is that what it is? So that's why Knox is always falling back toward the endzone while a defender is making an easy pick. Makes sense. It would also seem that this bad habit should be easily coachable. I don't understand why he keeps doing it.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots will apply the franchise tag to Mankins.

So much for that option.

Looks like the Chargers will franchise V-Jax as well. And since he'll get about 10 mill(up from 3.2 last year) for the 2011 season, it's not likely he's going to make a big deal out of it.

Carl Nicks it is.

Sure you can franchise UFAs. It's just not worth paying Manning what he'll get with the franchise tag.

Uh...if they really want him so bad to be their Offensive Coordinator then have him. Jesus. Its not like he's a brilliant offensive mind there. I like what he did with an offensive line that may be the least talented in 30 years, but come on man. Don't put him in any position of power.

ouch. Wonder what Tice thinks about that.

Probably thinks he signed a 2-year deal and he should deal with it.

After all, the Bears are only acting in his best interest.

I'd like to thank the Bears for making the Titans better. Tice as OC just seems like a bad idea.

Yeah, seriously. I'd be scared as hell to have Tice as OC.

With Munchak, Matthews, and Tice though, they should have a hell of an OL though. Even if those 3 gotta play themselves.

Yeah, my first thought when I saw Munchak was going after Callahan and Tice was that he's simply trying to horde as many OL coaches as he can. Problem is, with Callahan or Tice, the rest of the offense would probably be pretty bad.

Chicago Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice was somewhat disappointed in the team's decision to deny the Tennessee Titans permission to interview him for their vacant offensive coordinator position, an AFC source told ESPNChicago.com's Michael Wright on Tuesday.
