Someone tell me how Peppers makes this play as quickly without doing what he did.

He hits him lower? Is this a trick question?

Well hitting him too low is also a penalty. He's also in a throwing motion and you'd like to be able to disrupt that as you make the tackle. Maybe you hit him as fast but you also let him have a clean throwing window. That's taking away from the defender.

The idea that you can safen the game by cleaning up dirty hits only and not by taking away a defender's chance to make the play in the fastest possible way in certain cases is a complete fiction. It's a sport played with forward body lean by both defenders and offensive players and it's inevitable that helmet to helmet plays occur when all a defender is trying to do is make a play in the shortest amount of time.

I'm not disputing at all that it's a flag by the book.

There's quite a large gap between the knee caps and head. I'm by no means suggesting there was any malice, but he hit him way too high. I'm sure even Peppers knows that.

The plight of the defender pales in comparison to the health risks involved(not on that specific play obviously, but the cumulative nature). You might disagree, and it's not unreasonable to think these players know what they're getting into, etc. But that's the stance the NFL is taking, and I have a hard time finding fault in it, even if it does turn the NFL in the direction of Arena ball.

Anyone hear what smart guy mark schlereth said today? They mentioned something about him on boers and Bernstein but I missed it. Anyone hear? Because I'm sure it was brilliant.

B&B said that he said "I don't care about the truth" or something similar in regards to now knowing about the extent of cutler's injury.

That was it. I'd love to hear more from schlereth. Man nothing says integrity more than "I don't care about the truth."

The only cheap shot I remember seeing in the NFC championship game was Chris Harris. I don't remember any at all in the game at the end of the season. I thought the Packers were guilty of several in the first meeting. Considering the rivalry and past history of cheap shots, it's surprising there wasn't more aggression between the two teams in this huge game.

it's leading with the helmet and hitting another guy in the helmet. you can lunge at the quarterback and hit him pretty much anywhere else except for in the head.

'My girlfriend is a huge Bengals fan, hates the Steelers with a passion as most Bengals fans do, and has also always hated Jay Cutler because of his "attitude" in interviews. I just asked her who she thinks is a better person, Jay Cutler or Ben Rothlisburger and she [expletive] said Ben. I reminded her that Ben is a rapist, and she said 'well yeah but he's probably a better person'. How? When has Jay done anything close to raping someone? Ugh

Sounds like your girlfriend doesn't have to consent for you to have sex with her anymore....

Well, though I haven't seen it called in a game I've watched, I'm pretty sure there is some rule about rolling into a guys knees after what happened to Carson Palmer and Tom Brady in successive years

He refused to play with a sprained knee, duh. Everybody knows that's much worse.

as bob sanders pointed out, there's a big area between the quarterback's head and his knees. peppers wasn't crawling on the ground. he could have lowered his head and hit rodgers with his shoulder rather than launching his head at rodgers' helmet.

I think if you would watch that play again... it looks like Rodgers was finshing his throwing motion and his left shoulder dropped down enough that Peppers hit his helmet instead... That's what it looks like to me after watching it a couple times. I think Peppers was going for his shoulder area, but he was just a little late. I don't think it would've mattered if he lowered his head as he would've still hit Rodgers in the helmet (most likely). It's still a flag regardless. Only way it wouldn't been a flag is if he leads with his shoulder first. DEs won't ever stop tackling high because they also try to "whack" their arms in hope to knock the ball loose and that's hard to do when you're trying to tackle at the waist/stomach area.

i watched that play again and no, it doesn't look like that to me at all. plus he's quite obviously not going for rodgers' arm, he's just charging at him fast and hitting him. he could have avoided a penalty by lowering his head and initiating the tackle at rodgers' chest or waist level; instead he led with his head and that was the first thing to make contact (with rodgers' head).
