The difference between Gehrig and Pujols is not as great as you think.

You are right, but Gehrig has slightly better offensive numbers over a longer period of time.

For the hell of it... (if they had 3 year splits instead, I'd do it... but whatever, the sample sizes are small as it is)

Fielder career at Wrigley (49 games)

.298/.424/.579 (1.003) 116 tOPS+ (that would be relative to his total career OPS) .328 babip

Pujols career at Wrigley (86 games)

.298/.397/.602 (.999) 92 tOPS+ .263 babip

I think that's a bit much

It's all in the tOPS+

Looks more to me like it's all in the babip. (unless that was a bad Happy Gilmore joke)

He had to face some pretty good Cubs pitching 01-04 that Fielder didn't.

This.

I never like it when people say that a certain batter did well in an away park. You have to account for the level of competition they were facing as well.

It probably goes without saying, but with Theo basically writing off Aramis returning next year it increases the chances of getting a Pujols or Fielder.

Jesus Christ, people. The comment about Pujols was obviously tongue in cheek. For [expletive]'s sake.

That or we're making one hell of a run at the #1 pick.

Can you imagine this lineup without Aramis and without either of those guys?

I wasn't just talking from the perspective that we need one of them, but just pointing out when you have this much money to spend in free agency and you know you're not spending it on 3B, well.... how many other places can you spend it?

A new rotation?

Absolutely. I kinda was attempting to imply that but it didn't really come across... basically if you don't sign Aramis, and you don't sign Prince or Pujols, that money goes just about nowhere, like you said.

If Hendry were still around, I could see it being spread out among 4th OFers and loogys, of course.

Considering that since 1980 the only non-strike/lockout season that they had a worse offense was 1992, I'm going with a pre-steroid level of ineptitude as an answer. (1992 they scored 593 runs).

1b, starting rotation. If you really wanted to, you could probably upgrade 2b or CF with a free agent as well.

They could use help at any OF position.

Do you mean this year? It was a league average offense. I find it hard to believe that none of those other awful 90s teams had worse than average offense. Or the 02 and 06 teams...

On that note, nabbing Quentin for RF could help replace a good chunk of Aramis' production, it seems the White Sox could want to deal him this offseason. The Sox strike me as the team that makes the occasional dumb trade, maybe we could get lucky.

He's just comparing runs scored totals, not how they compare to the league. Obviously that doesn't make any sense. The Cubs were 8th this year and 10th last year and 2009. In 2006 they were 15th. They've definitely had worse offenses than this season.

Correct me if I'm wrong but he pretty much sucks in the field, can't stay healthy and is unreliable at the plate.

He's got his faults, but still strikes me as an excellent buy low opportunity in terms of risk/reward. He's only 29 still.

He hasn't had an OPS lower than .820 in the last 4 years outside of one really injury plagued year, though he does usually miss a decent chunk of games. Still, if I could get his production for 130 games (reasonable) + playoffs (hopefully), i'd take it.

Anyways, we're getting a bit off the Pujols/Fielder topic, but I just thought i'd throw his name out there.

Actually, considering league average, 1992 was the worst I could find. Unless my math is wrong, they scored 9.4% below league average that season and 9.2% below in 1997 and 2006.

Edit: My original point was without Aramis and Pujols/Fielder they'd be that bad, not this past season.

I'm starting to think that 2012 is really going to be ugly unless Theo has some magic trades to make. To me it's looking like Pena or LaHair at 1B, Flaherty/Baker/DeWitt at 3B, Byrd/Colvin in RF, and no Wilson in the rotation.
