If the Cubs can get either player at a 5-year contract with 1-2 option years, that'd be ideal. If Pujols wants 8-240, give him 5-180 with a couple option years at the end. Anything that can lessen the long term risk works more in the Cubs' favor, because even if the Cubs aren't ready to win in 2012, they can and will be ready in 2013-2015, and during those years the Cubs are going to need some kind of cornerstone at 1B. With none in the system, this is the perfect opportunity to add a huge piece that will be extremely productive for the next 5 years.

And unless a Joey Votto becomes available in the next year or two, there's nobody else out there comparable that the Cubs would be able to get with such ease.

I think I'm pretty firmly in the Prince Fielder camp. The dude is entering his prime at 27 so even a 6-7 year deal wouldn't see him being too old at the end. I don't really want Albert for 8-10 years which I really think he could end up getting. For all the fat jokes and concern about his weight, etc., he does appear to be a pretty healthy guy having switched to vegetarianism a couple years ago if I recall correctly. Also, he shares my birthday, which is awesome.

So despite the fact that he is excessively overweight, you think he's pretty healthy because he doesn't eat meat?

I don't even know where to begin with that.

I just think there's too much worrying about his weight. Along those lines, should we not have drafted Vogelbach because he's fat?

I point to the vegetarianism as grounds for my believing that he isn't likely to spiral further out of control weight wise. He wouldn't be close to being the first overweight player to have a long and productive career.

I think the money saved by signing Prince is worth it. In my eyes, Pujols is just as likely to break down due to age/injuries as Fielder is due to weight issues over the course of the contract.

You can begin by lightening up. He's had no history of health problems. His father was fairly productive until the age of 32 and he's wasn't nearly hitter his son is.

I think if Theo targets him, he will have been fairly well vetted. I'll wager he'll come closer to living up to his contract than Pujols.

He could just be a massive human being. Those exist too. Fielder's conditioning has improved greatly as he's been in the Majors. It's not as simple as "wow do you see how big he is? He's FAT (sorry, "excessively overweight")." Fielder doesn't have fat guy/old player skills at the plate (he doesn't K enough, and he hits for good BA), which IMO is a huge deal for his future and how he ages. It even kind of speaks to the shape he keeps himself in, as logically someone as excessively overweight as him would see some kind of decline somewhere in season (BA might fall due to the bat being slow down due to being fatigued, K's might go up, something)...None of that shows up.

While no one is going to going to confuse Fielder for being svelte, he's really not all that fat anymore. I think "excessively overweight" is an excessive exaggeration these days.

I'm pretty sure Prince weant back to eating meat a while ago.

Yeah he was only a vegetarian for one season and went back to it because he said it effected his power that year.

I guess you and I have a different definition of excessively overweight.

Too busy IN LAW SCHOOL to eat.

I was originally going to go to law school.

Took the LSAT and killed it, too (unnecessary subtle douchey brag)

Being the slacker that I am, however, I've since just ended up working for my brother's company that I worked with during college.

Yea, true.

But I've gotta throw myself a bone every once in a while, as being a slacker who hasn't accomplished much of anything in life and spends his time arguing about things on the internet doesn't leave much to brag about.

It's my one thing. I'll cling to it.

I was going for an Andy Bernard tone to that post...when he starts going off about Cornell and Hofstra... SLAUGHTER

that was not subtle

you beat me to it

but anyway, i would not look back in regret about that decision. LSAT and law school are easy, but what comes after kind of sucks for a good 80% of people. HOWEVER, if anyone make it work it is CT

Who says vegetarians don't eat Little Debbie snacks?

I'd be happy if the Cubs acquire either Fielder or Pujols, if it is the best fit for the team. Fielder's immense body MUST be a consideration, as I am sure it will be. He is pretty athletic for a bigger guy, but I would be very surprised if the excess poundage doesn't take a toll on his joints. Most likely in the next 5 or so years.

It's going to be very interesting to see what moves are made.

that's how i justify that decision and make myself feel better about it.

if my work ethic sucks now, there's no way in hell i'd be able to handle the workload of law school, much less actually being an attorney.

Edit - come to think of it more, it's not even laziness so much as an insane procrastination problem, which leads to immense stress when deadlines near... and at some point my coping mechanism for stress came to be shutting off/down completely. none of that sounds like a good recipe for a job that takes a commitment to tons of work intensive hours.

Evidently. Fielder probably nearly doubled my weight at one point, but he is thinner now:

I really don't consider that "excessively overweight." At all.

Law school is awful . . . but also kind of great. The workload is over-stated.
