A two-year, $22MM deal would likely stretch the Giants' budget, Baggarly writes. The asking price for the 34-year-old Beltran figures to be even higher. Outgoing CEO Bill Neukom suggested yesterday that Boras will start the bidding for Beltran at five or six years, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Wait, what? If he wants 5-6 years for his oft injured 35 year old, I wonder what he wants for a 28 year old in the prime of his career who happens to be one of the best hitters in the game.

Nobody is going to give Beltran 5-6 years, but I would expect Boras to say that.

Any agent would given Beltrans performance record this year and historically. Personally, for the team that isn't relying on him to be the man he'll be a coup for at least the next two years. Injuries or not the guy is a legitimately great fn player and one of the games best athletes.

I realize that it's a lot of bargaining on both sides, but a lot of GMs and owners are talking about staying away from 6-7 year contracts. The Blue Jays are the latest according to MLBTR. That sounds good for the Cubs pursuit of Pujols/Fielder except for the fact that all of the "talk" in Chicago seems to be about re-signing Pena. I guess we'll have to see how it all pans out.

It's going to be a very interesting offseason for sure. Hard to even speculate on anything until we get a GM in place. But Levine mentioned 2 or 3 starting pitchers will be our biggest need. The way I'm looking at it is we've got close to 100 mill committed right now towards 2012 with needs at 1B, 3B, and starting pitching. In that 100 mill figure, I'm counting the deferred 5 mill on Pena and Silva's 2 mill buyout in it along with counting Wood as being back. I am not counting Baker, Dewitt, Hill, or Johnson as being back. Levine mentioned he expected a payroll between 120 and 130 mill. We're going to half to shed some more payroll somewhere before I see Fielder or Pujols as true options most likely. Maybe save half on Z's 18 mill? Maybe trade Byrd? At any rate, I'm figuring we'll have to make some pretty economical trades to fill some of these holes before we can get serious about Pujols or Fielder.

At the deadline they acted like Baker was an important part of the 2012 Cubs. Of course, Baker isn't costing much anyhow.

Yeah, the Pena talk worries me.

Yeah, the Pena talk worries me.

Look, the guy who will make that decision will be the GM, who has yet to be determined. The Cubs future 1B could be anyone from Carlos Pena to Prince Fielder to Albert Pujols to Casey Kotchman to Bryan LaHair to James Loney. It's one thing to discuss how each option will affect the future of the team, but there's really no point on speculating who is the favorite until the GM is in place.

Do we have what it takes to get Joey Votto?

Probably not, but that would be like a sweet drip of honey sauce in my mouth.

Rosenthal thinks the Reds will at least be open to offers.

I'm having a really hard time envisioning what kind of package could net him.

The only guy in our entire organization that could get The Reds attention would be our starting shortstop.

I realize Beltran is relatively svelte and all, but 276 games played over the past three seasons doesn't really scream great athlete.

Oh at his age he's nowhere near the athlete he was in his prime, but the games played thing is a health thing rather than athleticism thing. Those injuries are the main reason he should only get 2-3 years (MAYBE 4 if the GM feels lucky/crazy) rather than 5-6.

Don't think this needs a new thread, but Kila Ka'aihue was DFA'd today by the Royals. He'd be interesting to bring on if Pujoles/Fielder aren't signed for whatever reason.

At least Bryan LaHair hasn't proven that he can't hit big league pitching yet.

I found some further hope for LaHair today. Shelley Duncan has gotten PAs and ABs...almost 500 of them...over the past couple of years with the Indians.

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/25/cardinals-offer-to-albert-pujols-likely-to-remain-in-the-range-of-22-million-per-year/

According to a Cardinals reporter, the Cardinals are "inclined" to offer Pujols a deal in the range of $22 to $22.5 million annually.

I believe it also says they may take off a few years from their offer, while nit increasing the average annual salary. I'm not exactly sure what kind of power play the Cardinals think they're making with this, but they're [expletive] idiots if they think he'll resign for that

Take IFWIW, in her wrap up and look ahead column in the AT BAT iPod app Muscat made no mention of the Cubs pursuing Pujols or Fielder. Is she that out to lunch or does she know something we don't?

did she talk about any specific free agents by name? since she's an employee of the cubs, maybe she's not allowed to discuss the potential signing of players who are currently under contract with other clubs?

Until we have a GM, nobody knows who we're pursuing, because there's nobody in place to pursue them. Even if there were, they couldn't be openly pursuing them until 5 days after the World Series ends.

It's ok for a sports reporter to speculate since she won't be going after anyone. It was just sort of odd to see no mention of the two best FAs. That's somtimes how teams get the word out. She speculated that Colvin, LaHair, or Pena could be the Cubs 1st sacker.

I don't know if she's employed by the Cubs or MLB though. Her boss could make the difference.
